Living in a Lawsuit Happy Society

Discussing a recent lawsuit that was pointless and a waste of the court and attorney's time.

When does bending the rules to please the norm going too far? This is stemming from Lisa Carlson, a single lesbian female from California who is suing E-Harmony for discrimination because they don't provide their service to gays, lesbians, bisexual, or trans gendered. This doesn't make a bit of sense when there are enough dating websites out there to cater to people who choose to engage in the alternative lifestyle, but this was after the attorneys for both E-Harmony and Carlson were on TV giving statements on their clients' behalves claiming that it's discrimination to there's no real ground for discrimination.

I would have to agree with the attorney for E-Harmony who also cited a similar suit was filed in California as well until the judge over the case dismissed it calling it "frivolous". It's getting to the point that people who choose to live and engage in the alternative lifestyle looking for relationships that they're looking for people to bend the rules for that, but there are websites out there that service different lifestyles. It goes beyond a gay/straight issue it's in other areas too because it seems as if people are using this as a reason to suit their need instead of the needs of others.

How is it fair that people are permitted to sue dating services that caters to a certain lifestyle, if they don't service your particular lifestyle(s) then move on and there are too many things you can look up to suit your lifestyle taste and suing a single dating company for rules that are not discriminatory they prefer to serve customers who are heterosexual having a preference and discrimination are two different areas. We live in a sue-happy society where we're suing for the most pointless things especially a Virginia judge who sued a local cleaners for $60 million dollars over a pair of missing pants. Not only was the judge abusing his legal power, but he is also making it look bad for the officers of the court and the law who take their positions seriously.

Sometime back in the late 80's someone had gone to McDonald's for breakfast and had ordered a cup of coffee and ended up spilling it in their lap and got a 2nd degree burn injury and they sued McDonald's for a million dollars when it wasn't even necessary to sue for that much when they could have sued for medical expenses and reasonable lost wages, but a million dollars was a bit excessive. Other fast food places that served coffee across the board had printed on their cups “Warning: Contents in cup are hot” after the lawsuit against McDonald's was made public so that other establishments could avoid getting sued as well for a spill.

It's gotten to the point that people find reasons to sue for some of the dumbest things that aren't even worth the monetary amounts they're seeking. I think this woman who sued E-Harmony wasn't obviously too smart when she knew that their stipulations were as such that their services is not open to gays and lesbians. The suit was pointless and pathetic because she could have gone on sites like PlanetOut.com , Gay.com , and local personal ads in the paper, but to sue a website that she should have been well aware didn't service alternative lifestyles.

To sue E-Harmony she wasted the time of the court and the attorneys representing both sides because the lawyers have more important cases to handle than some disgruntled gay woman who wanted a dating service to change their policies so she could use the service too. This is where people need to differentiate the fact that gays and lesbians have more than enough resources online for them to look for people to date and websites appropriate to the lifestyle. The lawsuits today are just pointless and a waste of the lawyers and the court's time.

This is why the legal system has changed the standards to keep pointless lawsuits from wasting the court and attorney's time being pursued. It doesn't really suit the point of some people who feel they need to sue people just to be suing. You didn't see frivolous lawsuits 30 years ago being filed because lawyers and judges had a good sense of what case(s) were worth their time pursuing and bringing it to justice and wasting the court's resources in assembling a jury and the time invested into holding a full court proceeding just for something as small as suing a dating service for discrimination when all it's going to get is a dismissal.

They should reprimand people for pointless lawsuits since it's a waste of the court and lawyers time to file lawsuits for someone else's rules and preferences. In 1992, 79 year old Stella Liebeck of Albuquerque, New Mexico had ordered some coffee from a local McDonald's and she ended up spilling the beverage in her lap, and she later sued McDonald's for $2.9 million dollars for an injury she did to herself which shouldn't have been a legal issue anyway. McDonald's by law has to have hot drinks regulated to a certain temperature to remain hot.

It has now gotten to the point that people are abusing the legal system and there's no solution in sight to stop this kind of pointless abuse of the very system that stands to protect the innocent and punish the guilty.
