Have you ever wondered what you would do if one of your favorite fast food chains started serving all healthy food? Students across Indiana are facing this horrifying reality. The new nutritional wellness law is the cause of this. The nutritional wellness law should be abolished because it punishes the entire student body due to the mistakes of the few, students have a harder time staying awake in class because of lower glucose levels, and students sometimes skip lunch.
The entire student body is punished due to the mistakes of the few under the nutritional wellness law. Only twenty six percent of students in Indiana are medically obese, meaning the other seventy four percent of students are punished for consequences they didn't cause. Therefor, it is my belief that not all students are to be held accountable or required to follow this law. It is ridiculous that the majority of students are being punished because of the minority. School administration should assess how healthy each individual students is and clear or bar him or her from the ala cart line. This laternate method would be fair to all students.
Moreover, students don't enjoy lunch as much as they have in the past. School lunch doesn't taste as good as “junk” food. Face the facts, school lunch is just terrible. Also, now smaller portions of food are served for school lunch, cutting down on the time to enjoy the food being eaten.
Students also have a harder time staying awake in class because of lower glucose levels because of the nutritional wellness law. The healthier school lunches have less complex and simple sugars in them. Simple and complex sugars, when entering the bloodstream, activate chemicals that inhibit sleep and keep a person awake. When too little sugar is in the bloodstream it causes hypoglycemia, causing sleep-inducing chemicals to be released and cause a worn down, tired feeling.
As a result, students fall asleep in class. Students miss valuable lessons and fall behind, resulting in lower grades. Not does the nutritional wellness law affect academics, it also affects athletics. Athletes need much higher glucose levels than the average student due to the higher physical stress they endure. School lunch can no longer provide the needed amount of sugars.
Yet another negative affect of the nutritional wellness law is that it causes some students to skip lunch. School lunch is terrible. Students don't want to waste good money on bad food. They instead decide to skip lunch and save their money.
However, skipping lunch is unhealthy. When a person skips a meal it causes great harm to their body. The glucogen stores in their muscles and liver become depleted and the organs of the body, prefering glucose as a form of energy, break down protein tissues, being mainly muscle. Then ketosis begins, which burns fat for energy. Ketosis causes fatigue, nausea, low blood pressure, slowed metabolism, and cravings for food. When a person gives into the cravings for food, they over-eat. Rapid high blood sugar occurs and your body quickly converts the sugars ingested into fat tissue. Thus when students skip a meal they actually cause themselves to gain weight and foil the nutritional wellness policy.
The nutritional wellness law should be abolished because it punishes the entire student body due to the mistakes of the few, students have a harder time staying awake in class because of lower glucose levels, and students sometimes skip lunch. The nutritional wellness law was clearly not well thought out, evident by the many problems caused by it. It affects parents and students alike. A petition sent to Mitch Daniels calling for the laws demise would be an appropriate reaction by the community. Another way to take action against this abomination is to contact a local news station and inform them of the adverse affects of the nutritional wellness law.
