There are many available devices in cars which are used to protect drivers from car accidents. The most important one I think, however, is the seatbelt. As more and more people die in car collisions, 63% of people killed in accidents did not wear their seatbelts. Wearing seatbelts is the safest thing you can do as soon as you sit in a car because it can dramatically be a difference of life and death. Studies show that if 90% of drivers buckle their seatbelts when driving, we will prevent more than 5,500 deaths and 132,000 injuries annually.
Although someone might think that they are protected by wearing a seatbelt, they have to make sure that they are properly worn. To make sure that you are properly wearing your seatbelt, make sure you position the lap portion of your seat belt snug to your body and low on the hips. You should never wear the shoulder strap under the arm where it could damage your ribs. Seat belts are extremely effecting during a car crash because they keep the driver behind the wheel and in control in a collision. It helps keep your head and body from hitting the inside of the vehicle. Also seat belts can lessen the impact when you hit the airbag.
By wearing a seatbelt, you can ensure that if involved in a collision, you will not be thrown from the windshield or anywhere else because of the security from the seatbelt. According to researchers, even if you're involved in small collisions, 7 percent of people not wearing a seatbelt will have serious spine injuries.
According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, “Seat belts are your first line of defense against injuries or death.” When crashes occur, unrestrained drivers are thrown against their steering wheels or ejected from their cars, while unbelted passengers hit the dashboard or go through the windshield. People who are ejected in crashes are 25 times more likely to be killed than those who remain within the vehicle.
