Avoiding the Rat Race

Do you ever feel that you seem to live to work these days rather than working to live? Not yet in a position to pack it all in and move to the country? Here are just three suggestions on ways to reclaim some of your time for your own benefit.

Spend as little time 'just' commuting as possible

It might not be possible to actually shorten your journey, but could you do something for you at the same time? If you catch the train, why not read a book you actually want to read rather than one to just pass the time, or knit perhaps? If you cycle or walk to work, you are already doing your body good, but could you change your route to give you a more scenic, enjoyable journey? If you drive, could you play a book tape or a language tuition or positive thinking tape as you go? Your traveling time is your own time, use it as such and the work day won't seem so long.

Grow part of your own lunch

Its too easy to eat starchy, stodgy, fatty food at lunch when we are working, but you can alter this even if you live in a tiny apartment. Get a long window box type trough, it can live on the windowsill inside if it can't go outside, and plant a mix of lettuce seeds including exotic leaves like chard, rocket and Chinese leaf. These will quickly grow and you can pinch out the biggest leaves to provide tasty gourmet lunch ingredients that will keep going for months and months. When you consider how much pre packed salad costs in the supermarket this one makes lots of sense, plus you grew it yourself, that has to be good for the soul. You can do the same with bean sprouts, cress and baby tomatoes even in the smallest space. Having a little homegrown salad every lunchtime as part of a balanced diet really helps you get through the day, and you can grow some salad all year round with a bit of planning.

Leave work behind when you go home

Try as hard as you can not to take work home and don't put the TV straight on when you get in. Change out of your work clothes as soon as you get in and have a mini routine of things you do just for the benefit of you and your family to start the evening off. It doesn’t matter whether its a private meditation or taking the kids out for a quick ballgame, its something you do for you. By all means settle down and relax with TV later, but if all you do is work, eat, TV and sleep, you'll soon feel drained, and even an hour of planned activity will make you feel more in control
