There was a time not so long ago when the majority of the worlds population was unable to read and had no power to influence what happened to them. Leaders had complete control over the lives of their subjects. Unfortunately, this is still true today in much of the world.
There are, however, many more people in the world who are becoming aware of the political and social aspects of their own countries and of the world in which we all live. These people are living in countries which allow free access to education for all their citizens and allow free access to uncensored news and political action. The world is now at a dangerous crossroads in its history. It is imperative that these more aware citizens begin to take a much more active role in the direction of local and world affairs. We can no longer trust our leaders, whether elected or not, to lead us in beneficial directions.
Leaders are elected or come to power with the help of powerful people who put vast resources at their disposal and usually want something in return for their support. This is the reality of the political world.
It is time for all socially and politically aware people both young and old to pool their energies and begin to demand a world that must become more humane for all and less driven by special interests. One individual making a small difference can become a huge force for beneficial change when working together with millions of other individuals. Each person can accomplish this by supporting those people and groups that are trying to make the world more responsive to the problems and needs of the millions of ordinary citizens who have no power of their own to change their difficult situations.
This article is a call to you and to all caring people (who want to make the world a healthier, safer, more humane place) to make a commitment to take some small individual steps to begin to make a social and political difference.
If a million people respond to this challenge, one small act at a time, we can begin today to implement those necessary changes which can make this world a place of peace and hope for all.
