Materialism and Donuts

There is a relatively new food available nowadays called the Donut. This food, for all its worth, symbolizes everything that is wrong with a materialistic society. “How so?” you may ask. Well, let us see.

The Basics

For one thing, the Donut comes in many various forms and flavors- chocolate, fruit, honey, sour cream, sprinkled, cake, jelly, sugared- just to name a few. Similarly, materialism comes in various methods- capitalism, interest, greed, miserliness, theft, communism, animism, deceit, 9 to 5's, drug dealing, secularism, mercenary work, etc. So, both have different types that all fall under the respective category.

The Donut is known to be quite unhealthy. The sheer number of excessive calories it forces on one, in addition to the pathetic size of each unit, makes it a lethal combination, allowing one to eat enough nutrition for two days in a matter of moments, without even feeling it! And then those who undertake it must live with obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and similar ailments.

In a like manner, materialism is known to be quite difficult on oneself. The sheer number of excessive responsibilities it forces on one, in addition to the pathetic notion that it is the only way to earn money, makes it a lethal combination, allowing one to lose out on the best aspects of life, without even feeling it! And then those who undertake it must live with depression, solitude, disrespect, and similar ailments.

Some Comparisons

The Donut is known to be quite addictive. Here we see those who eat them don't have the slightest clue why, they just do it. Oh sure, they may have a few weak excuses like, “It tastes good” or “It reminds me of my childhood,” but it's obvious that, deep down inside, no one believes these lies. The truth is that they are addicted to the rush of having so much sugar you don't know what to do with yourself. And this addiction is one of the hardest to even approach fixing.

The Donut is known to be a quick fix. It is clear that anyone who is truly hungry goes home and prepares a thought out meal. Those who eat Donuts aren't hungry and they don't need more food; they just want it and follow what they want in this “instant gratification” society. This thought process is so thoroughly implanted in the children through school that there's no other alternative way to think that they know of. So, when such an alternative is presented, they feel as if they are being personally attacked on a philosophical level. This they cannot take, of course.

In a like manner, materialism is known to be a quick fix. It is clear that anyone who is truly in need works hard and produces a thought out life. Those who take part in materialism aren't poor and they don't need more money; they just want it and follow what they want in this “instant gratification” society. This thought process is so thoroughly implanted in the children through school that there's no other alternative way to think that they know of. So, when one is presented, they feel as if they are being personally attacked on a philosophical level. This they cannot take, of course.

These are just a few examples of the devastating effects the Donut has on a person, used as an example for the devastation materialism has on a society. Think about it, and leave bias at the door or let it lead you somewhere else. Peace to those who follow guidance.
