The late comedian Mitch Hedberg once had a joke that went: “You know, I'm sick of following my dreams, man. I'm just going to ask where they're going and hook up with "em later.” Quite the humorous approach- and perhaps Mitch Hedberg lived out his very own dream as a comedian. But in all reality, you aren"t just going to “hook up” with your dreams later.
Maybe you're a child who dreams of being an astronaut someday, or maybe you are a college student dreaming of getting that degree. Whether you dream big or dream practical, it's always a good idea to have a dream- a plan, regardless of its caliber. It's very important to never sell yourself short of a passion.
Face it. Dreams, goals, aspirations- all these notions probe at the very core of everyone's mind. The formula of happiness is essentially a goal, a dream. Without a dream there wouldn't be much to look forward to in this life.
Ok. So you have a dream. But what now? Where do you go from there?
Well my friend, maybe it's time to stop dreaming and start acting! Time to get motivated! Everyone can possess a dream, but it's useless without action. Don't be discouraged if your dream isn't so practical just yet. You must almost always start small to move on to bigger and better things.
Getting somewhere with your dreams usually takes, but is not limited to these four steps- formulating an idea, making an investment, hard work, and strong determination.
Take for instance famous rock musicians. Suffice it to say they didn't get together one night over a cup of hot tea and became rock stars the very next day! They first had to realize what they wanted to do- the idea. They then had to purchase an instrument to act on their idea- the investment. Once they had their instruments they had to start putting music together- the hard work. And to turn their dreams into reality they had to have, you guessed it- strong determination.
Perhaps you dream of one day becoming a teacher. How would these four steps fit in with that goal? Simple. Your idea is to become a teacher, your investment would be a strong education, the hard work would be completing the education requirements to become a teacher, and finally you must be determined to get yourself there.
It's very important to take advantage of every opportunity presented to you when pursuing a dream.
“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” Thomas Edison hit the nail on the head with that statement. Success is not a destination, but a journey. You are never going to get anywhere with your dreams if you don't take into consideration the journey may be long and involve countess hours of hard work. Edison, a renowned inventor, never let hard work get in the way of pursuing his dreams. He looked at every attempt as a success. In fact, the word failure was not in his vocabulary. He even went so far as to say: “If I find 10,000 ways something won't work, I haven't failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.” This ideology is so true. You should look at failure as a learning experience, not an experience that is going to push you away from pursuing your dream.
Never give up…
When you find your dream, it is very important to never give up or let your grasp slip from fulfilling your dream. You must be determined to get where you want. Often times, people have many great dreams but let their lives pass by without acting upon them. It is a must that you believe in yourself and have faith in order to accomplish your dream and turn it into reality. Remember that old saying, “Rome was not built in a day”? This is very true. Realize that your dream will not occur over night. But don't be deterred by that, instead push forward and think positive.
If your dream seems out of reach at first sight, try breaking it down into smaller goals. Realistically, dreams are difficult to achieve with the demands of every day life. Taking small steps in order to turn your dream into a reality is the best, and often times only way to pursue it. Realize your potential, and decide how much time and effort you are willing to devote to your dream. Try organizing your thoughts in such a way that you begin to
