Guide to budgeting and leading a healthy lifestyle

Chapter 1: Good Food

Being in university or college is challenging times. Being active and having a healthy lifestyle is hard especially when you are on a strict budget. Eating well is important. It is common knowledge that eating fruits and vegetables are good for the body and mind. But it can be expensive and might break the bank. Budgeting is everything!

These are tips that encourage you to eat healthy and be active on a lesser budget.

  1. Breakfast: This is the important part of your day especially when having a test at 7am in the morning.
    1. Timbits from Tim Hortons (Doughnuts) - 10 pieces for less than $2 plus tax.
    2. Decaff Coffee – It's cheap. Prices may vary but anything above $3 is expensive.
    3. Kellogg's snackpack cereals- its $5 or less and could last 10 days. Milk sold separately.
    4. Restaurants like Subway and Quiznos offers cheap breakfast alternatives.
    5. Lastly, if you're really broke as a joke; just pack your breakfast from home.

  2. Lunch: Lunch time varies from student to student depending on their schedule. Usually from 11am to 2pm but most likely on the go.
    1. If time is tight, the best bet would be a canned or bottled replacement meal like milkshakes and energy bars. Its roughly less than $5
    2. If that doesn't satisfy you, go for the vending machines that dispense subs or sandwiches on the spot. Don't worry, they're fresh and refrigerated and always changed and refilled everyday if not, every the other day. Its approximately $3.
    3. Last resort would be; Fast food restaurants. They always offer a better deal or cheap combo. It varies from $2.99 to $4.99 a combo, just don't forget to exercise after and drink multi-vitamins. Most of them still contain bad calories so be careful.
    4. If that sounds expensive, just pack your lunch. It will save you a lot of money and more savings.

  3. Dinner: This is as important as any meals of the day. The best thing is to buy in bulk. I suggest frozen dinners, noodles and ready made snacks. Just watch out for High-calorie products, I'm sure you can read and choose the healthy ones.
    1. Noodles: Cook it as directed, Break the egg, Add then stir. Trust me its good. Usually it will cost you less than $3 for 10 packs. Now! that's a deal.
    2. Frozen dinners are tricky, it's cheap but you have to watch out for the expiry dates and calorie content.

Just don't forget that everything needs budgeting and sacrifices especially if you're a student. Most universities and colleges have work-out facilities and it's most likely included in your tuition, so take advantage!
