The DPM Revolution

How to throw an easy dance party - Dance Party Marathon.

About a year ago I was hanging out with my friend, and he told me about this party he was having called a DPM (dance party marathon). The idea was to have a dance party every weekend with all our friends and just rotate whose house we go to. So we tried it out, and it didn't get past his house that weekend, so we trashed the idea, until about a month ago.

A bunch of friends and I went to a girl's place to hang out, and we realized that there is honestly nothing to do in this town. There are only so many movies you can see, and after awhile even Buffalo Wild Wings can get boring. Honestly what is there to do? “Well, we've got a big living room here; we could always just put on an itrip and dance,” someone said. What was offered up as a simple idea to kill boredom, turned out to be the best idea since Marge's biscuits and gravy.

We danced the night away at Brookes, so naturally it seemed like a good idea to try it again the next weekend…and the weekend after that, and the one after that. Finally DPM was actually starting to spread.

Your first impression of hearing this is probably, “This just sounds like some dumb junior party.” I'll let you in on a little secret; it's not a party, it's a revolution.

Abbie Hoffman, hippie writer and demonstrator once said, “Revolution is a perpetual process embedded in the human spirit.” DPM isn't just about a mash pit in someone's basement every weekend.

It's love, hate, happiness, sadness, fear, and hope all in one. To put it more simply the “human spirit” in all of us, just disguised as on-going basement dance party to kill boredom.

Anyone can start their own DPM, just get some good music and close friends, and then let the mash pit commence. So the next time you and your friends are pondering on what feels better: running over your foot with your car, or trying to find something to do, join the revolution.
