From what we know of ancient history today, we find that one of the first things man invented were weapons; weapons to hunt animals for food, and then their skins for protection from the cold of the night. It was need that forced them to invent those weapons.
Now, as millenniums have gone by, weapons - very much like us humans - have evolved too. But the underlying purpose for the use of those weapons still stays the same, protection from harm and of course, leisure hunting.
The first recorded war was over 4700 years ago in about 2700 B.C. although it is widely speculated that there had been wars before that time too.
Now that history's taken care of, let us take a look at the present. If complete disarmament was to be done, it would disrupt the global economies to start with. The weapons industry accounts for millions of jobs and trillions of dollars being pumped into the economy. Doctors, engineers, scientists, other professionals, everyone is somehow related to the weapons industry. Millions would lose their jobs, economies would slump, and households would be left penniless. In short, it would be disastrous and would cause a global depression.
In today's world, weapons determine how powerful a country is. Weapons are imperative to a country's survival, especially considering the fact that so many preemptive strikes against autonomous nations are taking place in these modern times. They have to defend their honor and freedom by all means necessary. For that they need weapons. Besides, even if all the weapons in the world are taken away, where will they be kept? Is there a hole big enough for them to be buried in? Is there any one nation that can be trusted with taking care of all the weapons in the world? It is merely stupendous. How exactly is a country supposed to protect itself? One does not expect tender national issues to be settled by mere discussions.
Even if absolute disarmament could take place, who would know if one country has gotten rid of all its weapons? Would someone even abide by the honor code, overlooking the enormous edge having hidden weapons would give them? Power is addictive.
Looking at all the facts stated above, it can easily be understood why the idea of absolute global disarmament is down right ridiculous. Nobody can keep a check on anyone else; weapons are a necessity and governments love power.
