Jane Goodall Institute Celebrates 30 Years: Celebration Debuts Global Leadership Awards

News about the Jane Goodall Institute's 30th anniversary celebration, set for Wednesday, Oct. 10.

The Jane Goodall Institute will celebrate its 30th anniversary tonight (Wednesday, Oct. 10) during an "eco-friendly" event in Washington, D.C.

The celebration will start at 6:30 p.m. at the Andrew Mellon Auditorium at 1301 Constitution Ave., NW. Acting as emcee for the evening will be Jeff Corwin, host of the Animal Planet television shows, "The Jeff Corwin Experience" and "Corwin's Quest."

During the evening, the Jane Goodall Institute will present its first-ever Jane Goodall Global Leadership Awards to honor other people and groups committed to improving the world for all living things. Among those to be honored are Chase Pickering (Youth Leadership Award), CNN founder and philanthropist Ted Turner (Responsible Activism in Media and Entertainment), U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D, Vermont) (Excellence in Public Policy) and former Tanzania President Benjamin William Mkapa (Global Leadership Award).

An earlier anniversary celebration, held in Los Angeles in late September, also honored Chase Pickering (Youth Leadership Award) and presented a posthumous award to Gretchen Wyler, who founded the Ark Trust that presents the Genesis Awards for animal protection Actor Ed Begley Jr. acted as the emcee at that event.

Jane Goodall is a leading primatologist, advocate for animal and environmental protection and the English U.N. Messenger of Peace. She founded the Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education and Conservation in 1977 with Genevieve, Princess di San Faustino. The Institute's goals are to increase conservation of habitat for primates; increase people's awareness of their relationship with others, the environment and other animals; promote non-invasive research into chimpanzees and other primates; and promote activities that ensure the well-being of chimpanzees, other primates and animals in general.

Jane Goodall tours nearly 300 days a year to promote her cause. Later this month, she will lecture at Wichita State University (Oct. 13), Duke University (Oct. 16) and the 2007 Science Festival opening ceremony in Genoa, Italy (Oct. 25).
