I've had a few strange things happen to me. Not like being abducted by aliens or finding my doppelganger, but still events that I've never been to fully explain. Usually these happen when I'm alone so I can never verify if they actually happened. But one event is different. Not only did I see it, but so did five other strangers.
It was March 2007. A friend of mine had come down on to Boston to see me for Spring Break. My friend had blown through all his cash and somehow completely forgot his PIN. Since I was putting him up for the week my friend wanted to repay me. It wasn't a big deal so I just asked him to pay for my lunch. The only problem with this plan was that my friend had spent all his cash and couldn't remember his PIN. Why he couldn't remember his PIN would be a whole story in itself, so just accept that this was par for the course with him. So now we had to journey to find a place that took debit cards, but didn't ask for PINs.
I knew exactly where we needed to go: McDonalds! While not the most enjoyable lunch I could think of, it was a solution. The closest one was in Coolidge Corner, which was about a mile from where my apartment was. So at Noon we awoke and walked down there.
So we arrive at the golden arches. Only problem was that their machines were down. Great. We left empty handed. For some reason we decided to walk through the Coolidge corner theater parking lot. It's a large lot that tends to be empty during the day. When we go to the lot there were few cars. A few people were coming out of the shops that abut the parking lot. It seemed quite normal at the time.
My friend and I were walking by a tan Saab. Suddenly there was a noise. It was almost like a grating noise. Then the car's engine turned on. We jumped back in surprise. The car then accelerated forward and slammed into the curb, then fell silent.
Every one in the lot gathered around the car. There were about six of us. We just stared at it, each trying to figure out what had just happened. An old woman exclaimed “There's no driver!” Everyone then realized she was right. We all glanced at each other, seeming to ask how a car with no driver could start and move forward.
My friend had had enough weirdness for today and I agreed. We started walking away as the old woman called the police. “It just started on it's own!” she shouted at them.
To this day, no one has been able to explain how such an event could happen. I'm sure it's something simple, but still I would love to know.
