How to Induce an Out of Body Experience

Some background relating to out of body experiences; Inducing them and the realities behind them.

Some Out of Body History

The ancient Egyptians of some 4000 years ago, called the spirit that lay beneath our flesh and bones the “Ka”. It was the soul (so to speak) and with deep meditation, focus, and belief, they were said to be able to induce OOBE (out of body experiences) at will.

Philosophers (such as Plato) and even some scientists believed that it was possible for the human “Ka” or in words of the Kabala the “Katra” to leave the body and explore the wide expansions of this and other dimensions. There are many ancient practices and meditative preparations that the ancients went through to induce these out of body experiences. Hallucinogenic plants and herbs induced some. Some were the result of days of fasting and religious chanting. It is documented that the ancient tribes of the Incas and the Mayans used sleep deprivation in combination with herbal potions to induce “traveling” hallucinations. These ancient civilizations knew that there was more to life than the flesh and bone bodies that we sometimes view as the be all end all to life.

Some Ways to Induce OOBE

Today drug-induced trips are highly discouraged and those who practice the art of astral travel have many ways to induce the phenomenon without drugs:

  • Deep meditation with visualization at its core
  • Centering and grounding
  • Rhythmic drumming
  • Focusing on the light of a candle to bring out the light of the soul to travel freely
  • Sensory deprivation in a controlled environment
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Sleep induced lucidity leading to dream control and astral travel
  • Self hypnosis
  • Religious meditation and imaging prayer

These are but a few ways that modern practitioners induce OOBE. There are some who would caution the beginner that inducing OOBE could be dangerous. For a long time it was a common misconception that one might not be able to get back inside one's body.

However, it is a widely held belief that the body cannot survive without the “life force” that is known as the astral body or “soul”. Hence even in near death experiences the “Ka” must return to the body after leaving it for a brief time.

Have You Had an OOBE?

There is a term used in the study of the OOBE called the “jolt”. It happens when you are about to fall asleep. You suddenly feel like you are falling or floating for a split second and then wake up with your heart pumping as you slam back into you body in a fully conscious state. This is said to be the beginning of an OOBE. Believers say that the conscious mind is unwilling to freely let your astral body explore, and it snatches it back inside of your physical body causing you this frightful jolt. I for one have had this experience many times and have no explanation for it. I would like to believe that I too am capable of having an OOBE like the rest of humanity, and the mystery and myths regarding the topic will be clarified when I am successful.

I am reading the diary of a nun who believed she was given special messages by Jesus which involved hallucinations or visions or some such thing which sounds very much like this. This may be a self hypnotic kind of thing or hallucinogenic thing but OOBE is as good an explanation as any.

Interesting article but I would love to learn more.

If you are interested in this stuff go search for books by Robert Monroe. He also has a series of hemi-sync cd's that will help you to induce different mind states.

All it really takes is that first OOBE. While in that OOBE you will experience a different spectrum of colors that you are normally unable to see through your physical eyes. Remember those colors because simply by focusing on them during a meditation can you easily obtain an OOBE pretty much anytime at will. (Unfortunately I cannot describe or show you those colors for obvious reason. Besides, if you cannot see them with your physical eyes then what's the use anyway, right?)

I have attempted OOBEs for nearly 13 years before finally obtaining a successful one. This is not because of the difficulty in obtaining one as much as it is overcoming the strange sense of fear associated with one when it is happening. No matter how prepared you think you are, the fear engulf every sense of your body when you first realize you are starting to leave your body. This is present for about the first 50 or so attempts and then it starts to get easier. Eventually you will be able to induce an OOBE after only about 15 minutes of relaxation meditation but at first it can take 30 minutes to 2 hours of meditating each night until it happens. Some may be able to do it within days... others can take years like myself.

Once you are able to do it, try something that I like to do. Travel through time. Even though there are billions of possible futures and none of them that you see could be the one you will experience in the physical world, it's still fun to view (sometimes).

Hey John, I just read your recent post and hope you read this and respond. I've been trying for a couple of years to have an OBE. When I first was trying, about two years ago I had an electric shock sensation in my head. It sounded a circuit breaker being connected, like you would see in the old Frankenstein movies. Anyway when this happened I also started to hear screaming, I panicked and came out of it.

Well I've been trying to achieve this state again with no success for two years until about three days ago. I woke about 3am so I began relaxing my body and focus on an imaginary object. I soon heard the static charge but managed not to panic. My legs immediately felt weightless and became suspended above the bed while my torso remained below. I didn't roll or try to leave my body my legs just did this on their own. I waved my feet back and forth a couple of times and thought to myself. "Oh how neat." About then my wife turned toward me and I thought I better put my legs down or she might think I'm nuts seeing me with my legs in up the air in the middle of the night. Well I put them down but my wife didn't wake, and although the weightless sensation left immediately I tried to put them up again and realized that my legs were under the covers.

I too have that panic expectation sensation and find to very difficult to remain calm through all stages of trying to reach an OBE, I believe it is what prevents it from taking place.

Could you possibly repost and put your technique for achieving an OBE. It would be great to hear from you.

Thanks.

I just had a "jolt" last night, right after just falling asleep. It was more like a large person body slamming my whole body pretty hard as I lay face down... Scared the crap out of me! Was on the internet looking to see if there was an earthquake even (in case I was mistaken at what I felt), or anyone reporting similar experiences. Hence, I finally googled the right words and found this site... Thanks! With the room's lights dimming off and on tonite, I am wondering about something more supernatural happening, tho.

I frequently get these "jolts" when I sleep (almost nightly). It is pretty frightening and I wish it was less intrusive. On the rare occassion I remember what was in my dreams I end up awaking sweaty, rapid heartbeating, frightened, and even more fatigued than before sleeping. Once i awoke crying kneeling on my bed "praying" for no reason soaked through y pj's. I still am unsure of what is causing this other "life" i see when i sleep but oobe seems to be the closest explanation.

so thanks and please continue the studies! I am excited to learn more!

to u mainly #6. I couldnt beleave when i read your comment its like describing what i didnt know how to discribe. I guess i have been able to doi this for years, but only at certain times. When u talked about the electric humming sound u hear as you fall into this ....whatever it is.... cought my attention the most. I was always afraid of it but would let myself go deeper and travel further then each previous time. I have noticed though that the longer i do it each time , i come out of it panting, partly grom fear but also for some other unexplained reason. It really made me feel so much better to be motre informed about what this is. When i do it i have to lay on my back and close my eyes. When i feel completely relaxed i try to look into my eyelids in the dark of them. When the dark turns in to space, not outter space but like looking into a dark room i focus on it and try to let my mind see the images in my head. when i can do this is when the hum starts and then u have to let your self stay like that. Fear always brings be back because although i can get up ....whatever part of me does anyway, it gets harder and harder to tell myself to come back. i will tell myself to wiggle my toe or finger and sometimes it takes a min to beable to. But when i do im out of this state and as long as i dont move around to much will go back to it every time i close my eyes agian. When it becomes to much to handle i have to get up and walk around it the cycle just keeeps going. Thanks for letting me know im not the only one.

I feel like im sinking into the bed and slowly become parolized not litteraly but i tell myself to move and cant unless i try really hard. Sorry i forgot that part but thopught some one would like to know all the details to help with their own experiance.

It happened to me one time, just few minutes after I laid to bed to get sleep I suddenly heard an eerie sound from my head and then I panicked and immediately got up from my bed to tried to pick up the cord to light my room but then, I was surprised that I could not get hold of the electric cord which I intended to insert in the electric socket. Realizing that I was out of my body, I became afraid and not like to look back at my bed knowing full well that I could see my body still lying on the bed. Suddenly, I heard again an eerie sound and my soul was being sucked back to my body. After that experience, I had various incident that I was in other places and had a oob experience for I knew it was not a dream for I was consciouly aware that I was in other places but the duration was just seconds for I became afraid and returned to my body.
I have two friends who have these oob experience and just normal to them. Their souls leave their body during the time when they feel intense loneliness. My friend was working in Saudi Arabia and his body travelled to his family in Philippines and he confirmed those many experiences to his family by telling the exact time what his family members were doing at the time his soul visited his family.

Every time I am about to fall asleep, I get this weightless feeling, and the feeling that I am spinning in circles, and then it\'s like I don\'t even have a body anymore. But then I fall asleep. But occasionally, I get a falling sensation and jerk awake.

Though I haven\'t had a OOBE I can recall, I do have a lot of strange waking memories of seeing myself briefly in the third person. It\'s pretty wierd.

i guess i read enough before hand- so when my first OBE happened i experienced no fear whatsoever.

i did my meditation/relaxation and MANY affirmations and visualizations and i guess i drifted off but before i knew it i was conscious again with NO vision. i was never afraid. i was aware i was laying in my bed but everything was black and i had the sensation i was free-falling continuously. then the sensation changed from falling to vibrations. i noticed the vibrational stage and the sounds that accompanied that stage (buzzing, humming) and i knew it was time to get \"out\". i contemplated how i wanted to get out of my body and decided to roll out. haha i rolled off the bed and was so excited to be out. i explored what my house looked like on that level.(i eventually did get some vision) when youre out, slight things are different. (a dresser will be placed slightly aside from where you know it should be, decorations will be slightly different) i guess i decided i was done so i went back to my room and layed on my bed where my body was (even though i didnt see my body clearly) and woke up and wrote it all down. it was very exciting! i never felt any fear, or anxiety over any part of the process. everything is just so chill when youre out, nothing is a big deal. also, i felt like i was in fastforward. i think our bodies (brains) severely limit how much we can think at one time, so when youre out, you can think of everything alll at the same time and since what you think happens... haha you end up in fast forward or ADD-ish.
its been a month or 2 since that experience and i just had another one the other morning. i hope to have many more in the future!!.

my best advice for someone who might want to explore this:
READ! READ! READ! the more you know the better prepared you will be and therefore you wont have the fear.

my 2 favorite books
*out of body experiences: how to have them and what to expect - Robert Peterson
*adventures beyond the body - william buhlman
