The Anglesey Arms, a pub built more than a hundred years ago still sits in the shadow of Caernarfon's iconic castle but also in the shadow of the “Hanging Tower”
Many people believe the Anglesey to be haunted, I personally do not believe in such things. But as the saying goes “You don't have to believe in him for him to believe in you” so the place may be haunted.
There have been stories about the Anglesey Arms and its ghosts. If you want those stories, search for them in books or the internet.
I am here as a worker in the Anglesey, giving you inside information of what we have seen, heard and felt.
Ghosts they may or may not be, but there's a certain something.
Oh yeah, the ghost has been named George by all bar staff. No idea why.
Being watched
I've heard this is common in ghost sighting, the feeling of being watched.
One night, I went upstairs to the kitchen on the second floor to turn on the outside lights (For some reason if we want the second set of outside lights on we have to plug them in upstairs rather than in the bar with the rest of the switches) So I passed through the bed and breakfast area as I have done hundreds of times before. I turned on the kitchen lights, crossed the room and plugged in our outside lights before leaving the kitchen and turning off the rooms lights. As I crossed the corridor between the B&B area and the door leading down to the bar I froze on the spot. I'd just had the feeling that someone was watching me. I looked around and all the Bedrooms had their doors open (normal) but the lights were all off inside because we had no customers staying, making the dark rooms the perfect place for someone to hide. I shivered as I thought of being watched and crossed the rest of the hallway in three very quick strides.
Later the same night, I went outside at last orders to pick up any wayward glasses and again I froze, not five feet from the front doors. I had the same prickling hairs and shivers. As I looked up at the very top floor I got the feeling of dread. I knew the bosses weren't watching me, they were in the bar, so why was I getting such feelings? Who knows.
This next one isn't just me, another worker who has been there for years gets the exact same feelings.
I was in the cellar collecting yet another crate of Magners when I, yet again got the feeling that I wasn't the only one in the cellar. When I told my collegue of this she told me that she gets it all the time as well. The creepy thing is, in the cellar, beyond the shelf, there is a door. That door exits into the Hanging Tower, the place of execution for few people. Creepy.
Out of the corner of your eye
Again quite a few of us have been affected by this phenomenon. I got it last night which is why I decided to write this.
It was Thursday, our quiz night, and the pub was very busy, as always. So I was in the cellar, back doors open, removing the empty barrels and putting full ones in their place. As I lifted one of the empty barrels and carried it towards the back doors, out of the corner of my eye I saw someone walking in the cellar from the direction of the bar entrance. I thought nothing of it as I carried on walking, the person was the right height of Alice or Maggie (two of the bar staff) so I put the empty barrel outside, closed up the back doors and walked back into the cellar area that has all the pumps and the door to the bar but it was deserted. So, with nothing left to do in the cellar, I walked back into the bar area and back behind the bar. Alice was putting glasses into the washer and Maggie was eating cake (A gift from our supervisor) when I asked why they were stalking me, as a joke obviously, they told me what I meant. I said “Stalking me in the cellar isn't exactly original” (I've had people sneak up on me in the cellar before and startle me) then they told me that neither of them had been in the cellar! I looked at the other bar staff, it couldn't have been either of them, they were either blonde or too short. So we looked at each other in complete understanding; it was George.
