Centrally situated, the famous York Minster is visible from much of the city of York. It has three towers and is the fifth church to be built on this particular site. It's the largest Gothic Cathedral in Northern Europe and dates back to medieval times. A church has been standing here on this site since 627 AD.
The Lady Chapel of the Minster features the largest stained glass window in the world. It is the size of a football field and depicts the beginning and the end of the world. In total the stained glass window contains 117 individual panels of glass. Visitors to this beautiful church have reported ghost sightings here for over one hundred years now. In the early 19th century, the ghost of an army officer appeared to his sister as she was praying in the church. He had died in another part of the world and his family never got to bury him and put his spirit to rest. There is also another spirit seen at the Minster.
His name is believed to be Dean Gale and when he was alive he loved to attend services at York Minster. After his death, his spirit has been seen sitting in the church listening to the sermons. Some witnesses have heard the sound of a barking dog inside the church. And some people have reported seeing a spirit dressed up in medieval clothing. York was occupied by the 9th Legion of Rome as evidenced during excavations of the foundations of York Minster. After the Romans retreated, the legion disappeared without a trace and they never made it back to Rome. To this day what happen to them is unknown and the mystery remains a secret.
The Minster York Cathedral is open to the public and admission is free. Visitors are encouraged though to leave a small donation after checking out this very beautiful, very religious, and very haunted church.
