Most people come to Wicca wanting to learn magick, like they see on television. They believe that what they see on TV, through programs like Charmed, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, and I Dream of Jeanni, is what magick really is. Well this message they are portraying kind of upsets me. I decided to write this article to help people better understand what Wicca is about.
Science has taught us everything around us is composed of million upon millions of tiny atoms and molecules that orbit each other, from the rock outside to our own bodies. The Vedic Sages of India have been teaching the same thing for thousands of years. This orbiting causes what is known as energy. The Vedic Sages of India have been teaching the same thing for thousands of years. Many people have called this energy by different names including Chi, Mana, Orenda, Od, and Psychic Energy.
Magick is the art of focusing and controlling this energy. Energy reacts to many different stimuli, including human thoughts and emotions. Unfortunately we cannot control this energy from our daily conscious minds. We have to align ourselves with a higher brainwave pattern to work with energy. Scientists have proven people in a trance operate on the theta and delta brain waves, where as normal functioning operates on the beta wave. So for us to work with this energy we most get our consciousness to the theta and delta waves. This concept is called "shifting consciousness".
To aid in "shifting consciousness" people use many different aids and techniques to help them focus. These aids and techniques are called "keys". Some of these "keys" are visualization, trance, chanting, colored candles, and just about anything you can think of. The reason for such diversity is not one thing works for everyone, so you must experiment till you find the things that work for you. For me, it is a combination of candles, and a soft instrumental.
Unlike most religions and belief structures, Wicca has only one rule and one law that govern every choice that Wiccans make. The rule is known as the Wiccan Rede. The Rede states, “Do as you will, but harm none.” This does not mean you can't defend yourself, or your loved ones. What it does mean is you should strive not to hurt any creature, regardless of how. This rule applies to thoughts, actions, and words.
The law Wiccans belief is called the Rule of Three. It states that “Whatever you send out, comes back to multiple times.” So make sure you always work for the good, and then good things will come back to you multiple times. The same concept applies to evil as well. This is the basis for Karma. The best way to figure out what side your thoughts are on is to ask yourself a simple question, “How would I feel if they were doing this to me?” Well I hope that after you read this that you understand a little more about what magick truly is.
