Britney Spears: Not Yet a Woman

What's late '90s pop without Britney singing and shaking her thing to "Baby One More Time"? The then 16-year-old Louisiana native set a tough precedent for other hot young blonds like Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson and Mandy Moore to follow.

Oops?

Conservatives and feminists cried foul when Britney, then 17, posed wearing only a bra and a pair of skimpy shorts on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in 1999.

Step up, but...

The move proved a smart career choice. People wanted more of Britney and her sophomore album Oops!...I Did it Again (2000) sold a staggering 1.3 million units on its first week alone. For four years, Britney, now 26, was the biggest solo female act in music. But in 2002, things started to go downhill. Among her faux pas: alleged sexual tryst with another man that caused her breakup with former N"Sync-er Justin Timberlake, a 55-hour marriage to childhood pal Jason Alexander; a sudden and unpopular marriage with backup dancer Kevin Federline; baby mishaps; messy custody battle; and a head-shaving incident in between trips to rehab.
