Columbus did nothing but claim that he found the Americas when in actuality; his destination was to find an alternative shorter route to India for trade which is why Native Americans were referred to as Indians. Also, it can't exactly be said that Christopher Columbus discovered America since there were people living there already. When Christopher Columbus got to the Americas or New World, it is believed that trade took place between his men and the Native Americans. One aspect that is not much discussed is how Christopher Columbus and his men is what they did to the Native Americans. They often killed Native civilians and attempted to steal land. Through my research I found out that Columbus's men reduced the Taino Native American civilization from as many as eight million to about three million in 1496.
Looking at what Christopher Columbus has done, it is obvious that this man has done nothing great and does not deserve to be commemorated as a great man in US history. He should not be recognized for his mass murder of many Native Americans. Another known fact is that when Christopher Columbus' men set foot on American soil, they spread disease that the Native Americans were not immune to which caused a large amount of death. Also the food that Columbus' men brought to trade with the Native Americans also made them sick. Christopher Columbus did nothing great to be remembered throughout history pertaining to the discovery of The New World. As a matter of fact, he did not discover the Americas. All he did was try to run the Native Americans out and establish his own civilization. If he was to do something great that would benefit the civilization then he should have his own holiday, however, barely any good came from Christopher Columbus' coming to the Americas.
Also since he technically landed in the Americas on accident, he doesn't deserve the title he has today. All Columbus should be known for is for is death, slaughter, and taking over a land that was not his. Christopher Columbus turned a discovery into a takeover that lead to death and slaughter. In January, we honor a true hero, Martin Luther King. This man fought for the rights of the black people.
Martin Luther King deserves a holiday do to the fact that his actions actually benefited the human civilization and did nothing to attempt to harm it intentionally. Compared to all of the other people whose lives we celebrate throughout the year, Columbus is the only man that did nothing great. Some of the people that deserve their own holidays are presidents that did more for the American Society. There are many people that deserve their own holiday more that Christopher Columbus. How can we celebrate the life of someone who was a murderer? In my opinion, he shouldn't even be recognized in any good manner.
