Heroes: Not the Tv Show

Real heroes, real stories. real power in this part of the world.

In the Philippines, there are heroes; all of them I think are dead. I've watched the TV show heroes and It reminded me of the people I've heard, some I've met.

There are people with special powers; they are the ones we call people with “anting-anting”, compared to amulets “anting-anting is often swallowed. It is often inside a persons body, it comes with Latin prayers and one who has it have to follow three, four, five and even more specific instructions like do not bath and eat on Fridays. That is the easy part, I don't know if you could stomach the others. You don't want to hear it, and every power differs though so let's just skip it.

Fine. My friends' father almost had one, He went to Mt. Banahaw ( a sacred mountain) and had spoken to an elderly and the guy decided to give him an anting-anting, the old guy even showed him what he was going to have and made “it” walk in his forearm. His father described it like, walks like a gorilla and is so mean looking. My friends' father was so excited to have it until he heard of the second condition he has to follow. That is to drink his own blood once a week and have a bottle with a fetus filled with water and drink that water once a month. He did not accept.

Everything, every power has different conditions or verbal contracts should I say for it to work. The worse condition though is, if it was given to you when you are poor, your status will remain that way forever. So you better just have it when you're rich… he, he, he.

I'm gonna tell you about stories I have heard from my friends, their fathers, their grandfathers. These are not real names.

Ronaldo works as a crew for a cement delivery truck. One day they delivered cement in a place called Laguna. While traveling the highway they had a flat tire so they stopped on the shoulders of the road. The driver and the other crew found out that they have no car jack. Ronaldo wanting desperately to go home lifted the side of the truck for his crew to change tires. Ronaldos' anting-anting gives him power to lift heavy objects. Same goes for that farmer whose carabao fell off a ravine and can't get out. He called a friend who lifted the animal with his bare hand.

Norlito owns a little store, his grandfather passed to him his Anting-anting. It gives him power to govern fire, the one used for cooking? When he was still in his proper senses, my friend would often buy eggs from his store, since Norlito knows them well he would sometimes ask my friend if he wants the egg boiled or fried. “Boiled” my friend said. Norlito took one egg wrapped it in his shirt, said some Latin prayers and after that threw the egg to my friend. The egg was boiled alright. Norlito got addicted to methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) and that is why he is not in his proper senses now. He said he has forgotten the prayers to control it.

Harry walks around with slippers… his neighbors greet him “good morning Harry!” On other days Harry walks around barefoot… his neighbors greet him “Going' somewhere Harry?” or “Where have you been Harry?” Harry's power is he can go to faraway places without Visa. He's never told me where he has been, and you know what? I never caught him not expecting me whenever I go to his house. Soon, he told me that, nobody is a surprise to him. If someone like a cousin or friend or anyone will visit his house. He knows it kilometers away, even when he is sleeping, his amulet will wake him up and tell him that this guy or this person is coming. No surprises.

Randy, together with his friends' studies college in Manila, for them to get there is an hour and a half drive to crossing in Pasig and another half an hour or even an hour to university belt in Recto, Manila. All the time, Randy dresses up late, his friends are all ready to leave for Manila and Randy is still in his shorts and sleepers, so his friends would often go ahead of him, but here it's the catch… Randy is never late in school. His friends suspected that he really has anting-anting but randy wouldn't admit it to them. One sad, no school day… while they were hanging out near randy's house, Randy's ailing mother was dying…. His father called Randy; his friends came along with him to console and ease him up. His mother spoke up “Randy, I'm dying; I want to have rice cake from Binan…consider it my last request.” Randy cried… got up… went out of the house and after less than 10 minutes came back with the rice cake from Binan that is still hot. The place, Binan in Laguna is 4 to 5 hours from Randy's house.
