Charity Helps Tsunami Victims

The excellent work that a charity organisation has done to help tsunami victims overcome the after effects of the tsunami.

On December 27th 2004, a day after the tsunami an organisation called ‘ Adopt Sri Lanka' was formed by a group of individuals and businessmen whose aim was to provide immediate relief in rehabilitating and rebuilding local communities in the devastated coastlines of Sri Lanka.

About eleven thousand Muslim families were living in the Hambantota district and eighty percent of them were engaged in fishing. Officials of the Hambantota Dharma Kabir Mosque administration urged that help was needed in order to restore the devastation that had occurred.

The organisation is already helping the coastal areas of Tangalle and Weligama and has joined with other like minded organisations to concentrate on the affected areas. ‘Adopt Srilanka' has six main initiatives in helping the key areas of destruction which occurred due to the tsunami. These six main initiatives are ‘Adopt a school program', which focuses on rebuilding damaged schools, ‘Adopt a home' which provides housing for over 100 families. ‘Work for widows' which helps them to get back on their feet and also restore income of small businesses. ‘Swim Lanka' a project which teaches people to swim to help them overcome their fear of water and lastly ‘Bounce back Sri Lanka' which is aimed at revitalising the tourist industry.

Geoffrey Dobbs, founder of Adopt Sri Lanka and Chairman of The Taprobane Trust (PVT) Limited said in regards to the progress made so far that, "The new classroom at the Montessori school in Tangalle is nearly finished. We will use this school for the next 9 months. We are then intending to build a new school and the existing school will be turned into a hand weaving loom centre. We have to date raised about US$20,000 for it". Geoffrey also stated that, "We have received several visits from schools abroad, Island School- Hong Kong, Millfield School- England, Milton Keynes Preparatory School- England and Cheltenham Ladies College- England. Island School have provided for boats, school uniforms and have donated a home in our Mirissa housing project. Milton Keynes school donated shoe boxes containing basic school necessities to a Muslim school near Galle. They also intend to provide on going support. Cheltenham Ladies College are preparing to twin with a girls school in Tangalle".

These six long term initiatives which are already underway help to provide support to the victims of the tsunami in order to rebuild their lives. Many children who have been orphaned are too young to even know what age they really are, what schools they would have attended and what they would do in the future. By helping to give children a chance to go school and help rebuild the schools will make their future much brighter. ‘ Adopt Srilanka's initiative to provide work for widows is another great idea as they have lost their loved ones and need support to help them provide a life for themselves. It is inevitable that many people will have fear of swimming and of water after the tsunami and therefore the initiative to help those to overcome their fears is another constructive way of rebuilding lives. As you can see the charity organisation of Adopt Sri Lanka has many great initiatives and their work amongst many other charity organisations is being appreciated.
