Lessons From Charlie Chan

Wisdom for today from Charlie Chan's Chinese proverbs of old.

When I was in high school, there was a late movie on TV, often a Charlie Chan movie. They were not particularly good movies but I liked them, especially the old Chinese proverbs Charlie often gave to his not-so-helpful off-spring or his reluctant chauffeur. These sayings have a lot of relevance for today.

Rooster Think Sun Rise Each Day Just So He Can Crow

We've all known someone who thought the world revolved around them. Perhaps we ourselves were that way at some time in our life. Little children, especially, often feel this way if the adults in their life overindulge them. But there are people who think that nothing works right if they are not involved, who think they are indispensable to their work, who think their spouses couldn't get up and out the door if they didn't help them. They're the people who need to be the center of attention. Some of them are extraordinary. They may have been blessed with beauty, intelligence, money, power or all of these things. But if these things lead to pride and arrogance, wouldn't it be better to be ordinary?

Inquisitive Person, Like Bear After Honey, Sometime Find Hornet's Nest

The first inquisitive person was Eve and we all know the consequences of her curiosity. Today too many people are lured by curiosity into lifetime traps. They take drugs or alcohol because they are curious about how it feels to be drunk or high. Some like it and then lose their lives either spiritually or physically. We all know a poisonous snake can do us harm - some can even kill. But when we see one, we don't pick it up to see what its bite feels like. Then why can't we have the same common sense about addictive substances?

When Pilot Unreliable, Ship Cannot Keep True Course

We have an election coming up in which we will be electing our next president. We need someone who will stand up and be true to the values on which our country was built. Our nation became great as a result of these founding principles. However, when our president deviates from them, all of us suffer.

Words Cannot Cook Rice

Procrastination is something we're all guilty of at some time. We have good intentions of doing something but they don't matter, regardless of how good they are, if we don't follow through. It's not enough to say we love someone and yet don't ever do anything to show it. Rice in the cabinet doesn't feed the children! We must do something.
