If knowledge is power, why should we limit ourselves to subjects that are safe and politically correct? Spirituality is a very important part of our lives. No matter what religion you are, even if you are atheist, it is very important to understand why others think the way they do. If it would make you more comfortable, you could even call it psychology or sociology. After all, a person's spirituality can define a great portion of who they are. Culture is overflowing with religion. Religion can define many of the cultures of our society.
The tolerance of religion is poor in American society today. Religion has become a dirty word. In order to not tromp on other people's feelings, we are taught to not speak about ours. We should not be ashamed to define ourselves as Christian, Jews, Buddhists, or Hindi. We should be proud of our traditions, or they will die with us. In turn, we should not shun another belief, but try to understand that belief. The cultures of all religions should be taught. Maybe if we all know more about other cultures, we will not fear them so.
What are we so afraid of anyway? Are we afraid that knowing more about other people's religions will change our own? If you are afraid of this, then your spirituality is not rooted very deeply anyway. Knowing more about other cultures only makes us more understanding of people. What is wrong with that?
I honestly believe that the key to become a more accepting society is the ability to understand people. We should not limit ourselves by hiding from such a key part of our beings as humans. Religion has caused wars in the past, but that is because we were intolerant of others believing in something else. As long as we can teach theology of all cultures, then we are keeping open minds. The more we know about what other people believe, the less we will fear them. I believe that if people are taught all religions, the stronger their faith can become. We should not fear faith. Faith is the rock of our existence as humans.
