There is a commercial in which a woman points out her boyfriend. In the material world he certainly doesn't fit the type for this type of woman, he is rejected. Then when he enters the automobile he changes his appearance to a form that the material world accepts. Then he is accepted. This is the nature of the material reality. This other man might be a perfectly great person, but in the reality of materialism he is rejected. Experts of course could work with this man, perhaps, so that he is accepted by the material world. And he would have to go to "charm school."
People who study roles, role-player, and role-playing find subjects for study all over the civilization, in the real world and in the imaginary world.
They find that most people are naive about roles and role-playing. Roles are not something that most people study as an academic pursuit. Most people understand roles on the naive level, excerpt for the professionals, including psychologists. And many people when they assume roles merely play the accepted stereotype of those roles, or the accepted archetype of those roles. Others that study roles, role-playing, and role-players often transform the stereotypes and the archetypes. However, unless they are dealing with other "expert" and students of role-playing, most people perceive them as "doing wrong" unless they conform to the accept stereotype or the accepted archetype.
Those who decide to transform stereotypes and archetypes must do so in association with people who know what they are doing, who are experts, like social-psychologists, anthropologists, professional role-players who know what they are doing, and approve along with them of the possibilities of the new roles.
People who understanding role playing often write books on the subject, sometimes these become popular texts, and popular with enough people, so that they begin to accept new possibilities and new roles. That doesn't mean that others do not continue to play the roles according to old stereotypes and old archetypes. Certainly these traditional roles continue along with the new variations on the roles and the role-playing.
Housewife is a role that women are continuously returning to even though other disparage the role, other women recognize it as a good and traditional role that is necessary in society along with all the other roles. Yet it must be a role that women truly want to play. Also, with the nature of the modern economies, men who have housewives must be able to afford to play the role of provider in the manner that these women want. Or, certainly these women might consider some type of home-based employment so that they can contribute to the economy of the family and at the same time be housewives. There are many similar roles in society in which people must have mutual agreements and must be the appropriate role for that person.
In addition, there are many stereotypes and archetypes housewife. Many communities and regions and nations have different understandings of the role. Women can have their understanding of the role and men can have their understanding of the role. How is the role understand and what are the obligations of women who select to be housewives? They must also decide the chores and the work obligations that they have if another is the provider? There are many things in this role to consider along with the traditional and non-traditional roles that women in society have. And certainly, there are naive players of the housewife role and experienced players of the housewife role. Men who have housewives can also be naive players and experience players, or should we say expert players if they are assigned the provider role.
Every role in society can be a subject of study and analysis. Why do people roles and role-playing. Because people who assume roles in societies often do need expert advice on playing those roles, especially when playing those roles involve many many people, as in presidential role-players, for example. Throughout presidential history, for example, we have witnessed naive presidents and expert presidents, or rather those who appear naive and those who appear experts. And we have also witnessed the experts who have played naives. And maybe even the naives who have played experts.
