An Open Letter to Conservatives

A liberal calling out to conservatives.

How y'all doin? This is by way of a newsflash. I am 21 years old and a fairly standard example of a particular kind of liberal. I have never lived in a world without cable television, computers or air conditioning. I type 85 words a minute, sunburn easily and don't play sports. I like the smell of cigarette smoke and the feel of carpet. In short, the outdoors could quite literally cease to exist without significantly changing my lifestyle.

But what about you guys? Last I checked those big guns you folks seem to favor are used primarily for hunting, which requires large expanses of undeveloped land. Hard to enjoy a NASCAR race or a football game when the air is unbreathable, and while you might be able to fish a severely polluted stream, I wouldn't advise you to eat what comes out of it.

And to take things a step further, let's talk about farming. You know, the true spirit of America? The vocation of the red-blooded, churchgoing, flag-flying citizens you like to think of as your base? Toxic soil, carcinogenic air and filthy water isn't going to make it harder, it's going to make it impossible.

I realize I've been rather flippant here, so let me get serious for a second. The world of green trees, blue water, wholesome pastimes and real connection to the land you wanted for your kids is dying. It needs educated, committed stewards to bring it back from the brink. My friends and I are doing everything we can to try and live up to that, even though we really aren't the ones who are going to suffer. But you guys are. The natural wealth of this nation, one of the few things that make it truly unique, is disappearing. Your future is being stolen. Help us take it back.
