That means it costs $638,991 more to execute somebody than to keep somebody in prison for life (Cost). Another problem with the death penalty is that people can be wrongly convicted. An innocent person could be sentenced to death, and the killer is free (Innocents). “Since the 1970s, 119 people in twenty-five states have been released from death row on new exculpatory evidence” (Peterson).
Killing human life is morally wrong under all conditions. Some religions, such as the Roman Catholics, do not support the death penalty because it is not “pro-life” (White). If somebody murders another human, they did something that is morally wrong. Giving them the death penalty is doing the exact same thing.
Many people believe that if a person kills someone, they should get the same in return. There should not be a death penalty. It costs too much money, and it can be considered “cruel and unusual” punishment (Introduction). There have been many Supreme Court cases regarding the Constitutionality of the death penalty. A person can also be wrongfully accused and executed for a crime they did not commit. Life in prison without parole would be more punishment than dying from something like lethal injection.
Giving the death penalty is only a moment of suffering, but life in prison makes the person think about what they did every single day they are alive.
