Liberals and the Poor

How, and how effectively, the Liberals helped the poor.

In my view the Liberal reforms were effective in regard to some parties but not as effective to others. Overall most of the reforms worked well in reducing the amount of people below the "poverty line".

With regard to children they introduced free school meals in 1906; however this act was not compulsory and only 50% of local authorities set up the free school meals service. In 1914 14 million school meals were served up which shows a partial victory for the Liberals. After the act of free school meals in 1907 the Liberals set out to improve health in children as many families could not afford decent healthcare. The Liberals ensured that every local education authority set up a medical service which started out with regular check-ups but in 1912 it was extended to provide treatment in school clinics also. In 1908 a new act was inspired, the children and young persons act. This ensured the welfare of children as naming them as "Protected Persons" meaning that their parents could be prosecuted if they were neglected. This act also made insuring a child's life illegal.

With regard to the old, the Liberals introduced the old age pension for people over 70 that don't have any income, who had worked to the best of their ability during their working life and had been living in Britain for at least the last 20 years. The average pension was 5 shillings per week.
