Registration for one, the original purpose of the license plate was so if your car was stolen it helped the police find your car, but then they came up with this registration thing which the money you pay for it is supposed to go for fixing our roads and nothing else. There are roads all over the country that are in need of fixing, one such road would be pancake hill dr. which has been a cracked and damaged road for several years and all the people who live on that street pay there registration every year but yet their street is still in need of fixing. So where is all that money going? Strait into the pockets of politicians. We the citizens are just paying out lots of money each year for no reason. There are some roads that are being fixed but they are only the main roads and nice neighbor hood's streets.
Another problem would be the veto, the veto is Latin for (I forbid) and dates back to roman times and is used by several countries world wide. It is a concept that can be good in many ways but can also be a bad thing to have involved in a democratic country. Before a law can become a law it first has to be written as a petition and if it gets enough signatures it makes it on the November ballet and is voted on and if it wins the majority's vote it becomes a bill. Though even if it becomes a bill, congress or the president can veto it if they do not approve of the bill. So you see even if the people of the United States of America voted and said we want this to become a law the government can say “well” we don't. It doesn't make any sense, no matter if the government likes it or not a bill should become a law because the people have spoken!
The people of this country should have the right to have a hand in what goes on in our government, we deserve to have a say. This country was founded by the people and for the people, but these days it doesn't seem that way, the government can do pretty much what ever they want. There are politicians and regular people right now that are trying to take away some of our rights, such as the right to bare arms. People should be better educated about weapons, not lose their right to own them. They think that it's in the best interest of the people, but shouldn't the people decide what's best for themselves and their children.
The veto is designed to be more of a check-and-balance between the executive and legislative branch. What you describe is a democracy, which we in America are not. We are and always have been a Republic. This means, for better or worse, we elect government officials to vote for their constituents and, while there are certainly flaws to this system, it is the one we must operate within. “The People” are often a fickle bunch, many of which are uneducated and swayed by bumper-stickers and campaign ads. While our politicians are certainly no prizes themselves, they at least make it their business to be somewhat informed on most issues. The People do hold sway as a collective body, which we call lobbyists – something which has become a dirty word. But if you get enough constituents to agree on a course of action, they do have influence in Washington. The veto of a bill is not done as a show of congressional or Presidential power, but rather it is done because it represents that elected official’s constituents. If the representatives who seek re-election or hold to the principles which got them elected in the first place vote against or veto a bill, it is because they believe they are representing their “People”.
Laws have become ubiquitous and almost frivolous in this country, which makes them a terrible hazard. New laws should not be taken lightly and should truly represent a dominant (as opposed to marginal) majority of The People. In addition, the new laws should be carefully scrutinized to make sure they are Constitutional.
The problem with government is that we all think is should represent what “we” want. But you and I may disagree vehemently on issues. Therefore, there is a tug-of-war that is fought, the middle ground being defined by majority opinion over time. It may not be the best conceivable solution, but it is the best solution the world has ever known.
