To Wall or Not to Wall

A couple of years ago a bill passed the senate and president George W. Bush announced to the world that the United States was building a wall along the Mexican border to help reduce and control illegal immigration.

Seemed like a good idea to me, but after giving it about 5 minutes of thought I realized that this would be a total waste of national capital and the only good it would do was to increase immigrant's jumping skills. Since then I've heard way too much about this issue, probably a lot more than what I've ever would've waned to.

I've heard it all. from Ole' Bob down in Arkansas saying “send them all back they're taking away our jobs”, to Chicanos marching in Texas and California saying that this country without Latinos would be a total disaster, but honestly and realistically thinking none of these two opinions make much sense at all and if you were brought up and educated in this country since you were little and now you're job is in risk of being taken away by a non-English speaking immigrant then you probably should've paid more attention in Math class.

To try and send back more than 12 million people would be simply impossible and another waste of national capital but also to say that this country wouldn't function without Latinos is a little too much, don't you think Guillermo? I mean who used to cut our grass, collect our garbage, pick our tomatoes and build our houses before you got here? You don't have to answer, it's a rhetorical question.

When talking about immigration we need to start from the point that it's not illegal to immigrate, but it is to immigrate illegally, therefore we need to understand that to sneak into a country it's a crime; it is very illegal so like any other crime there should be legal action against those who get caught doing it. This seems very simple and easy to assimilate to me but a lot of people have a tough time understanding this. I'm tired of hearing people talk about how they come to work and to contribute to society like if doing that made them heroes or by them working we should forget about the fact that an American law was broken in American soil. We are a nation of freedom and opportunity for all and I think we've come long ways from “immigrant hate 50's and 60's” but at the same time I do think that it is within our rights to have absolute control of who comes into our nation and for what purposes. Would you just let anyone come into your house? Honestly…would you? If you find a total stranger who doesn't speak your language sitting in your couch when you get home? Would you let him stay? Even if he or she agreed to do your laundry and cook everyday it's still your house and you decide who stays and who doesn't.

“Latinos come to this country to steal, sell drugs and take American jobs away from real Americans”-I've heard a lot of people say- but is this really all true? Are all Latinos bad? Are all Americans good? Are all Jews rich? Or do all black people like Rap Music? Absolutely not and anyone who generalizes like that would be a complete ignorant and a perfect idiot.

I'm 100% pro immigration, as a matter or fact I'm an legal immigrant myself but I'm totally against illegal immigration, the same way I'm pro legal drugs which are necessary, but totally against illegal drugs, and that's where the line needs to be drawn. The word “illegal” means that it's against the law; therefore if you come to this country illegally and you get caught doing it you should not only be sent back but also be prosecuted by an American court and an American jury. We don't mind legal immigrants, we have hundreds of programs founded by the national government to help immigrants, from food stamps all the way to free education for their children and we give so many visas every year for a reason, we don't mind you coming here, just let us know before so we can give you a nice welcome and fix you some tacos before sending you off to work in the morning.
