VA Tech - Aftermath

What is the Virginia Governor doing about this tragedy? Is he making political hay?

Let's look at some of the idiocy in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech shootings. Here are some quotes from an article by Bob Lewis an Associated Press Writer. Let me assure you that Bob is not alone in this, I could find at least twenty other like articles.

"Similarly, the chairman of a panel appointed by Kaine to review the massacre said the reporting requirement must be tightened."

This article is referring to Governor Kaine and the requirements for reporting mental issues so they are available to check when someone purchases a gun. This should be an investigation into how the Commonwealth of Virginia FAILED it's citizens. It did. They did not enter this information into the data base so Cho bought a gun. Gun control legislation is not needed. House cleaning in government bureaucracies is sorely needed to prevent this from recurring. The laws were in place. Inaction in Virginia negated them.

Some are blaming the federal government for not providing for the reporting. The laws on reporting have been in place for some time. I have not heard anyone complain about this till now. If this was really the problem, why wasn't the Commonwealth of Virginia pursuing getting this fixed?

And there are lots of questions. Who knew this hole existed before and who was responsible for bureaucratic paralysis? This person or these persons need to be held responsible. If someone in the Commonwealth of Virginia State Police or mental health organizations knew this, why wasn't the heads of these agencies pressuring the governor? If the Governor knew, why wasn't he pressing the Federal Senate and House members from Virginia to do something? If they were being pressed, why were they not taking action. If there was a bill in the senate to fix that, why wasn't Harry Reed pushing it to the president's desk? The buck has to stop somewhere. It is time elected officials and bureaucrats who eat from the government trough know that they need to be serving the people who pay their salaries.

It is great to say that the reporting has to improve. It is great to say we will issue an executive order - apparently US Senate action is not needed! But why wasn't it done last month? And who failed the people of Virginia?

"It's pretty clear: He should not have been able to obtain a weapon," said retired Virginia State Police Superintendent W. Gerald Massengill.

Wow. Existing gun control laws WOULD HAVE WORKED if the bureaucrats had not failed. We don't need more gun control, we need bureaucrats who do their jobs. If a debacle of this magnitude happened in private industry heads would already be rolling. Why are they not you ask? First is lack of action by the legislature in providing rules that mean people have to do their jobs. Second is the lack of good management of the state bureaucracy.

"The governor also met in suburban Washington with Korean-American leaders to assure them that Virginians do not hold people of Korean descent responsible for the tragedy. Cho was a 23-year-old South Korean immigrant who came to the U.S. at about age 8 and was raised in suburban Washington."

Let me get this straight. Why is the governor meeting with "Korean-American leaders" on this? Is the with Korean-American community responsible? I would be lead to believe that if he is meeting with them they have some responsibility. I really doubt that so there is absolutely no reason for this meeting. And tell me, what status does with Korean-American leaders have? Are they ambassadors from Korea? If so, the Department of State of the US should be meeting with foreign dignitaries. More important, what is a with Korean-American leader? Is he elected? By whom? Can I vote for him? Can others in Virginia vote for him? Are the people who elect him limited to Koreans? If so, let's get a White-American leader and have him elected only by white Virginians. We all know that is wrong, at least I hope we do. This meeting is at best a farce and at worst a photo-op for the governor.

Now for Cho. He killed people. He may be a South Korean immigrant but if that is important we should feed all South Korean (and maybe North Korean) immigrants names into the data base and not allow them to buy weapons. Personally I think this is one really messed up individual and all of the Korean link is something for the press to make the articles longer. I don't think that Koreans are better or worse people than Mexicans, Brits, Australians, etc. But apparently Koreans and the governor think they are different. That flies in the face of "all men are created equal." I can't go there with anyone.

"I can assure you that no one in Virginia - no one in Virginia - views the Korean community as culpable in this incident in the least degree," Kaine said. He also said Virginia "would be a weaker place, Virginia would be a lesser place, if it were not for the contributions of our Korean-American citizens."

Virginia would be a lesser place if it were not for British immigrants, German immigrants, Dutch immigrants, ad nausium. Why do we have to say this? Because it guarantees the Korean vote. And oh, BTW, that is how the democrats refer to it, the Korean vote, the Mexican vote, ad nausium. We divide the country.

"The Virginia Korean leaders asked Kaine to boost mental-health funding for immigrants and their families."

This is totally out of line. The governor should have walked out of this. It is DISCRIMINATION in use of funds that are raised by taxing all Virginians. If the governor sees it appropriate after a reasonable study to provide more mental health funding for the people of Virginia so be it. Some of that would go to immigrants unless immigrants have more mental health problems. If they do we should maybe prevent them from buying weapons. These things cut both ways.

"Key Young Kim of the Korean Community Service Center of Greater Washington urged the governor to "help the citizens of this country not to mistake race as the cause of this incident.""

I can't find anyone who thought it was race till the with Korean-American leaders and the press brought it up. I've heard people say, "Some nut case shot up VA Tech." I haven't heard anyone but the press say, "A Korean Immigrant shot up VA Tech." Maybe Key Young Kim should ask the press to stop maligning the Korean community.

"Kaine said that state officials will watch for any reprisals against Korean Americans but that none have been reported."

Kaine took an oath that said he would "faithfully and impartially discharge all duties." Is he looking for reprisals on other members of the community? If not he is failing in his office.

Believe me, I am not anti-immigrant. I am anti-separation. It was proven in the 1950's that separate was inherently unequal. Any special treatment of one group harms all others and ultimately harms the group that is given special treatment.
