So far in this democratic primary season there has been a lot of talk about Canada and NAFTA and the problems it has (supposedly) caused states like Ohio. Well, ok, there actually wasn't a lot of talk until the primary in Ohio actually mattered to Hillary Clinton. Anyways...
Is there actually anyone in America that thinks CANADA is the problem with NAFTA? Let's face it, Canada and the U.S. Have very similar social values and income structure. Moving jobs to and from Canada and America has very little benefit to most corporations. The real problem has, and will continue to be MEXICO.
From the very beginning I was a supporter of the free trade agreement between Canada and the U.S. I was never in favor of adding Mexico into the equation. Mexico is simply not on a level playing field with us. Their labor laws are archaic at best and almost non existent at worst. Salaries are not even close to being comparable and social values are distinctly different.
In my opinion, the only way true free trade agreements can function is if they are struck between countries with similar socio-economic conditions and social values.
So, I ask you, why are all the Democratic politicians focusing on Canada when mentioning the evils of NAFTA? Easy, there aren't very many Canadian voters in the 2008 elections are there? Now, I wonder if there are any Mexicans?
