Bicol culture is known to be very traditional yet also adaptive to the fast growing modernization of our country.
Naga City in specific, despite its being conventional when it comes to culture and beliefs, has also developed innovatively that leads the city to urbanization. In result of this, popular landmarks and trendy attractions are now all over the city making more people even from outside the region visit it. Youths especially are more ecstatic to the comfort and superficial benefits such places bring them. For the college students particularly, it is where they can enjoy and break free from academic loads and relax once in a while. Although there is still the conventional feel around Naga City, its youth, being educated in the leading universities of the said city, appears to have a different culture and lifestyle. In terms of morality and values, the younger generation nowadays can easily adapt to western ways which is very contemporary and lax, and acceptance to western culture seems to influence the values of its people. Anything goes, as what it portrays. The standards of the people change as well as the city evolve into a more modern phase.
Even the disparity among Nagueño males and females narrowed in terms of dealing with delicate issues like love, sex and relationships. Girls seem to be more outspoken and vocal when it comes to their share of opinions and are liberated enough to be as daring as they possibly can. Different kinds of relationships surfaced and different kinds of people indulge in it. Casual relationship which is practically a casual dating between two people who barely know each other is not rare anymore among youths or much less, college students nowadays. And it can go further to one - night stand affair which is on a higher level of intimacy between casual daters and involves sexual intercourse between two strangers.
Now, what can be the real reason behind the people who indulge in a one-night stand relationship? It has always been a question to the researcher of this study why, specifically females, who ought to have a higher value or regard to their femininity and morality based on the custom they dwell in, would approve to such kind of affair.
The researcher of this study observes that one-night stand affair is no longer taboo especially to some youths in the early adulthood stage, despite the standard morality of the Filipinos. People aging from 19 to 30 years old are in the Young Adulthood stage where the person is ready for intimacy, that is, the capacity to commit himself to concrete affiliations and partnerships and develop the ethical strength to abide by such commitments, even though they may call for significant sacrifices and compromises, (Erikson, 1963). In Erikson's psycho-social theory, the crisis of young adults is “Intimacy versus Isolation” where they may want to fuse their identity with that of others or do the opposite, and it appears that with this, there is a significant connection why some females in college (young adults) indulge in one-night stand affairs. The reason could be personal or could have something to do with the society or environment the females grow up with.
Aside from individual differences and basic psychological traits, variations in social-value systems can be a factor in the issue. The psycho-social crises of any young adult will obviously be determined to a considerable extent by the social values which happen to be preferred in his society. Social standards also vary from society to society, and indeed between different groups within one society at any given time (Lowe, 1972). The Bicol setting or specifically the Naga City environment will be thoroughly discussed and assessed in this study considering that indulging in one-night stand affairs contradicts the custom and religious background the Bicolano race in common possess. Since majority of Bicolanos are Catholics, issues like this can be considered a problem of the society for it pulls down the morality level based on the religious faith and culture. Indulging in a one-night stand affair can be a sign of promiscuity as well so the researchers will probe deeper to the respondent's personality background and experiences to find if there are significant links.
The purpose of this study is to know the significant and common factors that lead some females to one-night stand affairs. This study can also give us new information about the said issue or predicament, thus, a better understanding for one-night stand issues can be obtained through the findings of this study.
