Shel Silverstein Biography

This is a brief biography of Shel Silverstein.

     Shel Silverstein was a brilliant man.  He was born on September 25, 1930. Shel was born in Chicago, Illinois.  He had one sister named Peggy Myers.  As a boy, he always had a great love for the Chicago White Sox.  He worked in the Navy and wrote newspaper articles for the Navy paper.  Then, he started writing poetry.  Shel always had a great love for poetry, and he wrote kids’ poetry books.

     Shel Silverstein was a excellent poet.  He loved to write for kids.  He looked at things in a different perspective then most people.  This amazing author captured the hearts of of not just kids, but adults too.  A couple of books that Shel wrote where A Light in the Attic and Where the Sidewalk Ends.  He was truly an amazing author and poet.

     This  wonderful author’s first children’s book was published in 1963, Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back.  He had never planned to write children’s books, but his talent led him in that direction.  After that first book, his career took off.  His very successful book, The Giving Tree, was also published in 1963.  Also, some more of his popular books included The Missing Piece (1976) and The Missing Piece Meets the Big O. (1981)

     There is a lot of interesting facts about Shel Silverstein.  It took four years to publish The Giving Tree because it was too sad and nobody thought it would be popular.  He also wrote songs for some very famous performers including:  Johnny Cash, Dr. Hook, and Waylon Jennings.  Silverstein sold over 20 million copies of his books and published them in over 20 different languages.  He won many different awards, such as ALA Notable Children’s Book Award, NY Times Outstanding Book Award, and also, probably his greatest achievement was the Grammy Award for his book, Where the Sidewalk Ends.

     Shel Silverstein was overall a very talented person.  He touched millions of hearts .  He made people laugh, cry, and just wonder about the world around them.  He fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a writer.  Shel sold millions of his splendid, heartwarming books.  Silverstein was different from most other writers. He was very unique in his own way.  He had his own techniques in writing poetry.  Silverstein was a brilliant man.  He will always be remember as an overall superb writer and author.
