Friends

Friends are people we pick out, mostly at a young age, and always at present times. They are inevitable, crucial, and without them, the sun wouldn't shine as bright, the sky not as blue, and the tomatoes not as red.

Friends, don't we love them? “A friend in need's a friend with weed” (Pure morning, Placebo) already states what friends are truly for. Weed is a drug used to smoke to stimulate certain feelings known as being “high” or “stoned”. We are addicted to it. We need friends. Without them, life would be like the night sky without stars. They are there when you need them, they let you put your head on their shoulders, they let you rely on them, lean on them, trust them. They are there in good, as well as in bad times, when small battles make up a big part of the day. They are the ones that stay loyal, the ones you can call any time of the day, and even night.

I remember one kid, sitting next to me in the bus, asking me how many friends I have. I answered his question, only to be countered by “Well I have (big number) friends”. He did not understand the concept of a true friend. So many times, I have heard people thinking that they have so many friends, yet which ones are truly loyal? Are the ones that aren't as loyal, really friends? It is a very complex topic. The majority of the people that have never moved have their bunch of friends whom they had known all their lives, from preschool to the end of the school era. Friends, which will never turn their backs to you.

Then there are the others. People you thought were friends. People you trusted. There are so many selfish people living on this earth, although one may exclaim that everyone, to a certain extent, is selfish. Nonetheless, it is not unusual to hear of people backstabbing others, in order to achieve certain goals. Another very known scenario is the fact that people, most of the time, stick to the people in their presence. For those people that have already had to endure the problems of moving, know that keeping in contact to friends you thought were going to be loyal to you all your life, is an extremely difficult task. People usually live in the present, they tend to blur out the past. So are friends merely the present people you talk to? It is often the case that people, when for example leaving school for college, focus on the people of their present surroundings, slowly forgetting the past, with everyone you knew going in different directions. So where is the loyalty in that? Are true friends not only the ones that are completely loyal to you? Who would never in their right mind even think of contradicting the fact that they're friends?

This is the second picture found with the term “loyalty”. It shows exactly how it should be. The loyal friend, the dog, protecting his little friend, looking out for him, and staying by his side no matter what. A friend that would, without doubt, jump through fire and swim through a pack of hungry sharks to protect you. That is a true friend.
