Marriage is really like having a full time job. It takes work, dedication and a whole lot of effort from both sides if it's going to last. Are you having trouble in your marriage? Are you not sure how to make it better or even where to begin? If so, that's perfectly fine because you are not alone. The national divorce rate is at about 50% these days. That's a pretty high amount of people who are getting married and then giving it up. Are they divorcing because they never wanted to be together from the beginning, they're just not happy together anymore, or are they just giving up without even trying to make it work? It's really hard to say why most people divorce, but there are a number of things that can effect a marriage and lead to divorce.

You have to realize that the only way for a marriage to work is if both people in the relationship are willing to try. If one is willing and the other is not, it's likely that the marriage may not work out. Sometimes a spouse may just be a little stubborn and not want to do marriage counseling or put forth any effort to help the relationship out. Far too often, unfortunately, this does happen.

Look at it this way, the two of you got together and you got married for some reason. I would assume you married because you loved one another, but sometimes people do marry for the wrong reasons. I'm sure at some point there was a "spark" between you two, some kind of a flame that if you try, you can rekindle. Here, you will find a list of suggestions for you to look at. If you are serious about your marriage and you want to make it better, both of you should use these suggestions every day and you can be on your way to a happier and healthier marriage. Think of it as a marriage "guideline".

Maintain Communication

They key to any relationship is communication. Whether it's with your mother, uncle, or a friend, you know that you have to communicate with one another to have a better understanding and friendship. Marriage works they same way. Keep open communication by having dinner together at the table (escpecially if you have children) or call each other on your lunch break. What ever you have to do to just talk to each other is what you're aiming for here. Keep each other up to date on what's going on at work or talk about things that you're both interested in. You want to talk to your spouse like you're talking to your best friend, which leads to the next suggestion.

Friendship

There had to be a chemistry between the two of you at some point. You should be best friends. It may sound lame, but it's very true. Think about your very best friend. Think about how you talk, what you talk about, the things you do together and what makes you laugh. You should have close to the same relationship with your spouse. Now granted, good friendships are hard to find, but if nothing else, you should have one with your spouse. Do the things together that you both love, watch movies that interest you both.

Honesty

Honesty is so important in any relationship, especially a marriage. You have to honest with your spouse, no matter if it's good or bad. If you start off with a lie, you have to cover up that lie with another one. Eventually your whole relationship will be based on one big lie. You do not want this for your marriage. If you haven't been honest this far, then start today.

Money

Don't fight about money. That sounds impossible, right? It's not that bad, you can do it. Money is such a bad thing to fight about. Money did not buy the love that you have, or once had with your spouse and it certainly won't buy you real love if you get divorced. Keep in mind that people every where have issues with money everyday. Some people can't pay the rent, lights, phone or any other bills they may have. The point is, it's meaningless to argue and fight about money, it's just not worth it at all. If you are struggling with money, try to find extra ways to make it and if you can't, don't fight about it, just try to work it out. Some people have problems with a spouse spending too much money going shopping or gambling, this happens quite often. If you believe that you or your spouse may have a problem spending money through an addiction to something, please seek help through counseling.
