Silver Surfer's On-Line Dating Experience

An amusing tail of a silver surfer and her first(and only) experience with on-line dating.

"…and it started off so innocently…"

Put your profile on such and such dot com he said.

You'll enjoy it he said.

There are lots of nice people out there, he said, you can meet friends and chat.

Sounded fine so where to start. Right, need a "handle" - what to call myself, well I like cats, cats are cute right? - CatZ it is. So far so good.

Describe yourself in your own words it asked, - well definitely need to say something about being a strong, independent woman - don't want anyone thinking I'm a ditzy female - right that's fine.

Need to show my sense of humour - I know here's a cool photo of the rear view of a Scottish soldier wearing a kilt on a windy day.

See - all links in nicely, looking good, maybe even get me one or two replies.

Day one = dismissed several weird messages, after all there are a lot of strange people out there and I suppose I did admit to being a nurse, that always did seem to attract some loonies. Fielded lots of requests for "private chats" because my computer can't accept them. Phew. Number of hits on my profile seem to be mounting, including an awful lot of messages from men within driving distance, all hoping I would like to meet them. Seemed a bit strange when I'd clearly included that I wasn't interested in meeting people, only in chatting. Yet here they were suggesting meeting and we hadn't even had a conversation. However, what do I know, I've never been on one of these things before, maybe that is usual. I'll just ignore them, they'll get the message. Finally on day one, a message for someone clearly wanting to indulge in some S & M - maybe the strong woman bit got them, so I'll just add a note saying "no stupid this does not make me a dominatrix". There that should fix it.

Day two = watch the hits rising - 500 - there must be a lot of lonely people out there, 600 - that don't mind me - 700 - being a bit passed - 800 - my sell by date. Here this is fun. -

Only when the number of visitors viewing my profile reached 890, and my Australian mate who had started the whole thing emailed me to tell me, did I discover my photos (and therefore my profile) had been rated for adult viewing because of the Highlander's bum. By sheer fluke my mate in Australia logged onto my profile as visitor number 1000.

Clearly writing me in between the tears running down his cheeks he pointed out that from a male point of view -

  1. that cats in some minds could mean something other than cute furry animals
  2. That yes indeed some men just LOVE strong women
  3. and that the promise of "adult photos" was enough to send many men right over the edge

Which only goes to show you - you can never be too careful. It also shows just how many sickos are out there. Still for a very brief time I can honestly say I had a thousand men looking me up on the Internet.
