Six Ways to Maintain a Good Communication in a Long Distance Relationship

Tips on how to make your long distance relationship last.

“Love knows no boundaries and no space,” as the saying goes. But why does a

long-distance relationship seem not to work for some? Is it because they're weak? Is it because it was hard to trust a partner who is far from you? Is it because there was less effort made to keep the relationship alive.

I've been in two long distance relationships. When the first one failed, I vowed to myself, that I will never put myself in that situation anymore. Not in my entire life. But then I wasn't able to keep my word. When I met my husband, I found myself in the type of relationship that broke my heart, big time. But you can not teach your heart whom to love. And I can't afford not to take the chance of loving again. But this time, I already learned my lessons. I have to give my best effort to make this relationship stay forever.

.Aside from love, trust and prayers, one of the important tools to keep this type of relationship, is good communication. And here are my tips on how to sustain it.

  1. Do not turn the cell phone off unless your in a place where using cellphone is not allowed.

It could really be frustrating when you are trying to call your partner but his cellphone is out of reached. You then start to have suspicions, like maybe he's with another girl, or is doing something he doesn't want you to know.
  2. Make sure you bring your cell phone when you are out of the house.

He knows that you're out. He probably trust you but not other people. He probably wants to check if you're okay and nothing bad happens to you. Or there could be an emergency situation from his end and that your attention needs to be called. Make sure too that it's fully charged especially if you will stay long hours outside.
  3. Invest for a PC (doesn't have to be a high-end one) and subscribe for an internet connection at home.

Communication through the internet is way better than using the regular phone. With Yahoo messenger, Skype or SightSpeed, you will be able to see and hear each other through their voiced chatting feature.
  4. Be a good listener to your partner.

Whether he shares with you his achievements at work, or a his disagreement with his boss, listen to him attentively and try to feel how he feels. In other words, don't just focus on his words but more on his feelings. This way, you'll be able to understand his situation better. Make him feel that you're happy when he's happy, and sad when he is sad.
  5. Always keep in mind her birthday, your anniversary, and other events which are important to your partner.

Women always remember dates. To some men, they consider it their weakness. So why not enter those dates in your Reminder so you will not be in trouble when that special day arrives and you seemed to have no knowledge about it. You don't also need to send her expensive gifts. It's the thought that counts.
  6. Let him know that you would rather stay at home to chat with him than go out with your friends.

There's always time for friends and family but I believe, that if you want to keep your partner, you should treat him as your top priority. This will make her feel more loved and in the process, he will be motivated to treat you the same.

The above tips would only be effective if both will participate. A relationship is always a two way street. They worked in mine. So you might give it a try.
