Such an unassuming question and chills of embarrassment and dread creep over my body. So, are you married? My first response is typically an uncomfortable chuckle, followed by the obligatory clearing of the throat and finally my patented response, "it's a long story."
I've actually been married now for 8 years to a wonderful man who doubles as my best friend. However, I will be celebrating my 2 year anniversary with an equally remarkable man this month. Now before you dismiss me as either a bigamist or simply a dirty, rotten cheat, let me explain.
Although my husband and I have been married for 8 years, we have been separated for 6 of those 8 years. Though separated, we talk every day, see each other often and even hang out with each other's significant other. Confusing I know, but as I type this, my husband and boyfriend are playing golf together.
The difficulty is that asking someone whether they are married or not is as acceptable as inquiring as to what they do for a living. It's a social norm. But who wants to explain all of that to someone they've just met? The good news is that my husband and I are planning our divorce, much like others plan a beach trip, and I can then honestly and comfortably reply, "why no, I'm not married."
