Abusive relationships are on the rise. So often we hear of crimes related to abuse and domestic violence in relationships. On February 8, 2008 a young woman, from Thibodaux Louisiana, was beaten to death by her boyfriend. In another incidence, a young lady was set on fire by her boyfriend. Almost on a daily basis, from different areas around the world, we hear of some type of abuse related to relationship. Most abusers portray the same type of behavior pattern. Before entering any relationship, an individual might look for warning signs.
Five Warning Signs of Relationship Abusers:
- Jealousy is a behavior that may lead to abuse. One definition for jealousy is envious, suspicious, and apprehensively watchful. In this day and age, with all the dishonesty in the world, it may be a little difficult not to be envious, suspicious and apprehensive. When an individual is extremely suspicious and watchful, the behavior may produce abuse. If your companion is always questioning your where about, this may be a good time to think twice about the relationship.
- Any type of substance abuse can cause changes in a person's behavior. Many of times the person is not him/herself. Substance abuse can cause angry and violent behavior. Substance abuse can lower a persons self worth and desire for life. Substance abuse is a warning sign for potential abuse in a relationship.
- It can be very difficult to live with a controlling person. A controlling person mostly feels good when everything goes his/her way. Control means power and power means control. The more control an abuser has over another individual, the more powerful the abuser feels. If your companion wants to make all the decisions, including to the point of telling you where to go and who to talk to, RUN. This person will make your life miserable.
- It may feel wonderful to have someone worship and adore us. A worshiper may say things like: you are the world to me; I would rather die than to live without you, or you are my everything. These are serious words. What would happen if the relationship fails? If I'm your everything, you may go to every length to keep the relationship; evan if the other person wants out.
- Have you ever met someone who has no respect for others and no respect for the law? This person has a criminal history, little moral values, and always downsizing people of the opposite sex. Watch out for this person because you just don't know what this person is capable of.
