A young woman has a personal jihad, which has nothing to do with being a threat to the west. The word jihad stands for struggle according to her, none of the association to the religious fanaticism many westerners give it. . What the threat is to a moderate society,
as is suggested, is the attitude that society has in the US. Many people look at her with hate for no clear reason. She stands out from the mainstream because of the headscarf she has seceded to wear instead of having a low neckline. Strangers look at her hatefully as a result of that, and it is common for people to react this way without thinking that she is otherwise a peaceful person who is not instigating any sort of slander against the American system by dressing differently.
What could be considered, as a threat to "free society" is the rejection that the second generation of Muslim youth are showing regarding certain values of American culture. But that rejection does not have to be taken as a slight to the consumer society. What can become a threat is the fact that many more second generation Muslims think that suicide bombing is a rational solution compared to their parents. Many actually believe it is better not to have sex before marriage and the male suitor ask permission of the father before he marries her which shows respect for the bride's family. This does not have to be taken as an insult to western values. Before the liberation movement that women experienced at the turn of the last century was it considered polite if a male suitor consult the father of his perspective bride?
In Holland, Theo van Gogh a descendant of the famed artist, was murdered because of a film he created showing that Muslims are responsible for the mistreatment of women. His female collaborator is currently under constant threat for the same reason. Holland hosts not only people who smoke pot at cafés but also those known to the government as wanting to brutally punish people who insult their Islamic faith. A Muslim speaker who spoke out against the lenient society he is living in is being investigated for having instigated hate against his hosting society. Remember we are talking about Holland an epitome of tolerance where different races and cultures have until now lived in harmony.
A young man committed suicide after he had witnessed the death of Palestinian girl in 2001. The family says that this self-inflicted suicide is an honour according to their traditions but more moderate Muslims disagree. According to moderates Muslim youth has to be given choices so that they do not resort to the same logic of what is otherwise considered as fanaticism in the west.
