Adult is not a dirty word.

Why does the word adult have such a different meaning to when I was young. When was the word adult hijacked by internet porn and dating sites. It meant something different when I was young.

When I was a young bloke and the title adult was used,I always thought of an older mature person who because of there age would know more then me and be somewhat wiser.

Somebody I could trust to give me guidance or to help me when things went wrong.

In the age of the internet if I were to questioningly put a google search in for the word adult , what I would get back is an endless list of porn sites or adult dating sites .After a little research just logging into one of the many adult dating sites I found that on that one site in North America alone there was in excess of thirteen and a half million men and women advertising for sexual encounters . The united kingdom 2,2 million and Australia and new Zealand 865,000. That's a lot of pictures of erect and shiny bits and pieces mostly having taken a trip to Brazil.

So what happened to the word adult that its most common use now is an activity that whilst a lot of fun and very necessary for the continuation and healthy well being of all humans , has become hijacked by what seems to be an addiction which is opposite to what I thought an adult should be when I was growing up .

One possible answer to this question is what is referred to in psychology as the shadow . When you look at the increasing fanatical religious denial of all that is carnal and what it supposedly means to be christian, all that good old fashioned sexual energy has to show itself somewhere. Guess maybe adult is a dirty word after all.
