Let's All Have Sex ... and Not for the Reasons You're Thinking of

Sex is awesome and this is why.

Many people find themselves coming up with excuses on a regular basis for not having to engage in sexual intercourse. Excuses can range from “I have a headache” or “I'm tired” to “I just don't feel attractive enough to expose myself to you tonight.”

People come up with very colorful reasons why it would be a bad idea to have sex tonight. Research tells me is that it is more beneficial to your overall well-being to stop making excuses for not having sex and start jumping into the sack. Your body and mind may thank you. Here are some ways in which having sex can make a difference in your health and well being.

Physical Health

  • Boosts the Immune System

In a study, people who reported one or two sexual "episodes" per week enjoyed higher levels of the antibody that helps fight disease.
  • Boosts Longevity

Another study said men who had more orgasms over a 10 year period boosted their longevity compared with those who had fewer.
  • Wards off Cancer

A recent study proved men who had more ejaculations over a 35 year period had 33 per cent less prostate cancer compared to those with fewer ejaculations. Another related study found sex can prevent endometriosis in women.
  • Lowers Cholesterol

Researchers say that having sex can lower our cholesterol because of the exercise we get from having sex. This, in turn reduces the risk of heart disease.
  • Improves Circulation

When we are having sex, our heart beat increases, which causes our blood flow to increase to our brain and to other parts of our body and as a result our blood begins circulating better.
  • Promotes Growth

Some researchers believe that an active sex life can promote bone growth and maintain and repair our tissues.
  • Improves Sense of Smell

After sex, production of the hormone prolactin surges which causes stem cells in the brain to develop new neurons in the brain's olfactory bulb, the centre which enables us to smell.
  • Pain Relief

Immediately before orgasm, levels of the hormone oxytocin surge to five times their normal level. This in turn releases endorphins, which alleviate the pain of everything from headache to arthritis to even migraine. It also helps relieve menstrual cramps.
  • Better Bladder Control

During sex you use the same muscles you use to urinate. Making use of these muscles as much as possible can lead to better bladder control.
  • Prevents Vaginal Atrophy

Women who abstain from sex run some risks of vaginal atrophy, a condition that can lead to pain during intercourse.
  • Heals Wounds

Some evidence suggests that sex can be rejuvenating to the point of helping wounds heal faster. Several experiments have shown that oxytocin can help sores to heal quicker by regenerating cells.
  • Decreases Risk of Breast Cancer

One study of women who had never given birth found that an increased frequency of sexual intercourse was correlated with a decrease in the incidence of breast cancer.

Mental Health

  • Reduces Stress

Numerous studies show that sex helps reduce stress by lowering anxiety levels, boosting relaxation, and aiding in sleep.
  • Fights Depression

Study: women who regularly engage in sex in which they come in contact with semen were significantly less depressed than those women that did not. This is a result of being exposed to semen, which seems to have a positive effect on women's mood. With this in mind, researchers point out that "regardless of the findings, this study does not advocate that people abstain from using condoms. Protecting oneself from an unwanted pregnancy or a sexually transmitted disease is far more important."

Aesthetics

  • Fights Signs of Aging

Sex results in a more youthful appearance. One study found men and women who reported having sex an average of four times per week looked approximately 10 years younger than they really were. Another study in Scotland, a panel of judges viewed participants through a one-way mirror and guessed their ages. Those who looked 7 to 12 years younger than their age were enjoying lots of sex-four times a week, on average.
  • Improves Fitness Level

Thirty minutes of sex can burn approximately 150 calories. A person who has sex three times a week for a year can potentially lose about five pounds a year due to sex alone. Sex also stretches and tones muscles, which can lead to a higher level of fitness and a better posture. Muscular contractions during intercourse work the pelvis, thighs, buttocks, arms, neck and thorax. Sex also boosts production of testosterone, which leads to stronger bones and muscles.
  • Produces Shiny Hair and Healthy Skin

Sex raises a woman's estrogen level, which helps make hair shiny and skin healthy.
  • Better Teeth

Seminal plasma contains zinc, calcium and other minerals shown to prevent tooth decay. In addition sexual intimacy usually demands the brushing of one's teeth before and/or after intimacy, which, by itself, would help promote better oral hygiene.

Reproductive Health

  • Promotes Regular Menstrual Cycles

Studies show women who have intercourse at least weekly have more regular menstrual cycles than those who have little or no sex.
  • Promotes Fertility

A study shows sex appears to promote fertility in women by regulating menstrual patterns.

The article has presented evidence which suggests that having sex can be beneficial to your overall health. However, it is important to emphasize that each individual should be responsible in making choices when it comes to sexual intercourse. Having respect for your health and safety, your morals and values, and yourself takes priority above anything else.

I agree with you, but whether to have sex or not, the condition is always depend on one's health condition and mental stability. In certain conditions, people are not allowed to do sex as it'll accelerate or worsen the existing health condition.

Though having sex is documented to be good for health, it should be carried out with ASM principle, namely Appropriately, Suitablity and Moderately, NEVER ever go beyond this extent.....dangerous!

Thanks for your article.

Good article. I agree that sex has many health benefits, but I would add that it should be done with common sense. Too much can be as disastrous as an unhealthy relationship. But I applaud those who do choose celibacy, for in this era, that is a sign that they're making their own way rather than falling into the status quo.

this article could benefit from links to the studies.

Shockeye, I think Chan Lee was referring to people who are not able to have sex, or adviced not to have sex due to a health condition.

reference links to research would give more weight to your article and strengthen your point.

but other than that... very interesting article. but personally... i don't think someone should try and force themselves into having sex if they really don't feel like it. even if it's better for your health... for example... say you have a really bad cold or the flu. you're feeling really gross, you've got a pounding headache, and aches and pains all over. all you want to do is just curl up in your blanket and sleep. shagging might not seem too interesting when you're feeling like this.

but other than that... sure... i agree... sex more often than not is probably a good idea. ;)

As Chan said, there are countries where promiscuous sex is frowned upon, and some are advised against it by their doctors for health reasons. While sex does have many health benefits, it also has many consequences when not participated in a responsible manner. There are many factors to consider.

B. Radley, you have presented a very attractive article. I would be interested in your approach to the other issues.

Thanks to everyone for the comments. I have a fix in to stress the importance of being responsible when making choices to engage in sexual activity. I apologize that this very important piece of information was not in the initial article. I had such intentions. Thanks.

I always knew that masturbation, and sex had benefits, I just didn\'t know what exactly happened physically that made these benefits take place. Thanks for the article.
#13 by Fred, Jan 12, 2008
Well, sex also leads to the transfer of STDs, which can kill people.
#14 by Peanut, Jan 12, 2008
Could it be that those who looked younger because they were having a lot of sex were only having sex that often because they looked young to begin with? Just a thought.

All in all, good article, but as stated before could really use some links to back itself up.

My personal views? this has just is a myopic view piont. what about the tons of unwanted preegnacies and disease illicit sex leads to?

so if you have a duaghter with a headache you would comfortable prescribe sex as a cure?

And according to your article a moral person or a virgin would fall sick more often? get cancer because she did not have sex? get bladder infection becuase of sex?

a lot of people are looking for excuses to support what their consience tells them is wrong.
conclusion: dont jump into bed expecting it to solve all your problems. based on your article regular sex and multiple partners would also be okay. the fall out? more broken marriages

very flawed article,I think some of these things you listed as "benefits of sex" are completely unrelated to the practice and I agree with Leno sex has a time, a place, and a purpose and is meant only in that context, sex outside of marriage has a name, fornication and immorality.People need to quit looking for excuses to do what they know is wrong.

I agree, the builder.

Highly educational, interesting, full of facts.
Great article

I absolutely applaud this! I in no way was offended by the article, as I assumed it was meant for \"couples\" in committed relationships, in which case, sex is an integral part of life. I think you\'re right, though, too many people in relationships where having a good sex life is right there are not enjoying it enough and that is just sad. C\'mon people, don\'t we wait our whole lives to have it right there? I think you did a fantastic job!

leno,
in no way does this article say that a person should have sex outside ov marriage or have multiple partners. If you read the last paragraph of the article you will see that I advise that no matter what you do, you should respect your morals, values, and who you are.

the builder,
your use of the word 'retarded' is much more offensive than any of the information found in this article. Furthermore, if you are disputing the information in the article, you may want to forward your thoughts to the authors and researchers who discovered the facts. The studies are cited at the end of the article.

Everyone else,
thanks for your comments. They are appreciated.

i think that sex is fun and healthy for your body.

In a sense sex is also hard work to do, so it may well be the case that it wears one\'s organism out if overdo. And really I will never agree to that it fights depression. That is the same to say that one better fight an effect than a cause of the effect!

Sex is great all and anytime, anywhere..
