Vanilla or Not

The result of a recent discussion on vanilla or sadomasochism.

Recently I found it challenging to discuss one's approach to lovemaking, somebody in the art's milieu had just marketed his first sado-erotic film which was a way for him to validate his own sexual preferences; he enjoys sadomasochistic relationships. There are people who believe that alternative sex is the best thing but I wonder if they are not just compensating for the lack of being able to enjoy something that is not as exciting or eliciting. I have a theory that followers of this method have gone beyond the stimulatory threshold that their "vanilla" colleagues prefer because common sexual practices just don't give them any sensual gratification. Personally I don't know how eliciting pain could ever be equated to pleasure but perhaps these practitioners have another way of interpreting what pain and/or pleasure is.

Such is the case for a film person coming out with sado-erotic entertainment who then purports that this should be a truer form of lovemaking because the vanilla form is void of any talking; there is little talk before doing it. He is obviously comparing that art form with his own preference and is missing one key element. Normal heterosexual and same sex couples do talk about what they like to do sexually before they do it.

I am wondering why the director came out with statements like vanilla gone bad leads to things like rape and necrophilia, when that abhorrent behaviour can be reached independently of the person's sexual choices and practices. I see that this sexual practice is no solution for those thinking that only here there is a mutual verbal consent between lovers and it free of any damaging repercussions compared to more accepted lovemaking methods.

Perhaps the director was looking to widen his market and so began to justify his sexual choice through the medium he used to express it. That was I mentioned that it would have been better had he just sold the idea of viewing his film without having to slap "vanilla" sex in the face. And I can't imagine how the spice ever got mixed up with sexual practices.
