Tame Those Pesky Zits

Do you know that over exfoliating, and washing your face with soap can increase the oil production?

We often think that acnes, zits, pimples or blemishes are common among teenagers. It is not so. As we age, our hormones change, especially for women, and our skin becomes more sensitive to break out.

Here are five products to try to help control blemishes.

Almay's Clear Complexion Collection

It is hypoallergenic and oil-free makeup. It helps to conceal blemishes, and fight pimples. The liquid and powder makeup contain salicylic acid, natural meadowsweet, aloe and chamomile to help with dryness, and clear skin.

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control

This line of product includes: Power Foam Wash, Hydrating Acne Treatment, and Power Clear Scrub promise to make acne one less stress for us. It uses Micro-Clear technology to fight breakouts, and reduce irritation.

Bioré Daily Deep Pore Cleansing Cloths

This is the best to clean dirt and oil on your face quickly. You can get 30 pre-moistened wipes for about six dollars. These wipes combine grapefruit and pomegranate to help with exfoliate, and clean the skin.

Aveeno Clear Complexion Daily Moisturizer with Total Soy

This line of products made especially for women from 25 to 49. These products contain salicylic acid, and moisture rich soy extracts to help women who are still fighting blemishes.
Neutrogena's Healthy Skin Anti-wrinkles Anti-blemish Scrub
This line of products uses alpha hydroxyl acid to help fine lines, and the salicylic acid to treat acne.

Tips from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD)

  • Over-exfoliating and washing your face with soap will dry out the skin, and increase oil production
  • Use topical creams with vitamin A derivatives, benzoyl peroxide and antibiotic to help unblock pores, open blackheads and whiteheads, and eliminate bacteria
  • Products with salicylic and glycolic acids help unclog pores, and control skin shedding
  • Non-comedogenic makeup does not clog pores
  • Remember to moisturize your skin
  • Talk to your dermatologist for different methods of treatment. He/she will determine what is best for your age, sex, and the type of acne.

I'm happy to say this is one problem I don't have, but it's nice to know what's out there, just in case.

I used to think I was the only adult with this problem. Even after I found out many adults were plagued with adult acne, I still was never aware of just how common it is.

Thanks for these great tips, Icy.

Thankfully, I've never had them, but I know some adults who do. Great tips. I do wash my face twice a day, but I usually moisturize straight after. I find that most creams do almost the same thing, so I never go for the expensive ones.

Good article, every now and then I will still get a dot or two! Just goes to show, I'm still a kid at heart, lol.

Very good information, I am very fortunate. I have thankfully never had zits, cross your fingers.

Icy, Always good to read your articles, you consistently put out such good information! Thanks much for all your hard work!!

I don't want to get any break-outs, years ago if I got one I stayed indoors and hid w/calamine! Then found out that a dab of colgate toothpaste did the trick. Ohhh, the growing up years!
Thanks Icy!

Icy! Great article.. a great product that i just found that works is the Clean and Clear Morning Burst face scrub.. it really wakes you up and it doesn't burn the skin like the other Clean and Clear products do! Great article!

Great article! Im sure it'll be helpful to a lot of people.
Wish i had read this a year back, i had got a facial done (from a renowned beauty parlour) and just 2 days later my face broke into a rash! I had to go to a dermatologist..and that is when i found out that it was not a rash, but acne, lots of them and the cause he said was over scrubbing! Before that i had never got acne as i have dry skin.

As I approach 50, I sometimes get one or two hormone-related zits at certain times of the month. All I do in the morning is to wash my face with a wet washcloth, no soap. (I don't wear makeup either.) My middle daughter (who does wear makeup) is in her teens and has a problem with zits, too. I'll have to refer back to this article for both of us. Thanks, Icy!

excellent article, we don't always have the time to try everything on the shelf at least your article had narrowed our options down.
