Hybrid Fruits

Bored with apples and oranges? Try some of these new cross-bred fruits for a new twist on produce.

Grapple (Grape & Apple)

The grapple has the appearance and texture of an apple, but tastes like a Concord grape. This makes the fruit somewhat sweeter than a regular apple. Rather than being naturally grown, this hybrid is made from regular apples infused with grape juice.

Orangelo (Orange & Grapefruit)

This hybrid was created spontaneously in nature.  An orangelo is sweeter and lighter in color than a grapefruit, but eaten in a similar manner.

Nectaplum (Nectarine & Plum)

The nectaplum has an acidic base mixed with a high sugar content. This gives the fruit a spicy-sweet taste where both the nectarine and plum flavors can be easily identified.

Peacotum (Peach & Apricot & Plum)

This mixed fruit was developed by Zaiger's Genetics and tastes similar to a fruit punch drink.

Pluot (Plum & Apricot)

This extra sweet fruit has a smooth skin like a plum and is rich in vitamin A.  Pluots are extremely juicy and flavorful.  However, they also contain particularly high amounts of sugar.  Other variations on the plum/apricot hybrid include the plumcot and aprium.  Each of these three varieties has a different plum to apricot ratio.

Rangpur (Lemon & Mandarin)

The Rangpur is a citrus fruit with a very acidic taste.  It resembles an orange in appearance, and is often juiced for use in beverages.

Tangelo (Tangerine & Grapefruit

This hybrid is traditionally created using a tangerine and pomelo (Chinese grapefruit).  However, other grapefruit varieties may be used.  The fruit resembles an orange with a thick outer skin.  The pulp inside is extremely juicy and often used to make beverages.

Tayberry (Blackberry & Raspberry)

This berry is longer than its parent breeds and has a dark red color.  Being quite sweet and aromatic, the tayberry is frequently used in jams and spreads, but can also be enjoyed fresh.
