If you’ve been trying to eat more organic foods but can’t make a complete switch, here are some pointers on which items are the most important to buy organic.
Produce. Most produce is heavily saturated with pesticides during the growing process. Try to buy organic produce that has a thin layer of skin like grapes or tomatoes. Another produce to buy organically is leafy veggies like spinach and lettuce. These leaves absorb at a high rate and retain the chemicals used in conventional farming. Thick skinned produce may be okay to buy conventionally, like oranges, limes, mangos, etc. One exception to the rule is bananas. Many banana farmers place bags filled with chemicals to keep away bugs and fungus which absorbs into the banana.
Meat. As expensive as it may be, it is always best to buy meat that is organically raised. The main difference is the food they’re fed, the environment their raised in and the procedures used to “beef” them up. The antibiotics used in conventional farming will remain in the meat and be digested into your system. No thank you.
Animal bi-products. The same is true for animal bi-products like eggs, milk, cheese, etc. Stay away from conventional animal bi-products, due to the use of chemicals and antibiotics. These too will make their way into your system and have an effect on your overall health if used for long periods of time.
Every week gather all the flyers for your local supermarkets and keep a close eye on who’s having what sales on these top priority organic foods. You don’t always have to spend a lot more money when buying organic. Also, check into your local dairy farm or produce farm and buy from them if possible. It’s the little steps that eventually add up to larger steps and make a life difference.
