What is with retail stores at this time of year? They have taken two beautiful holidays and turned them into major money-makers. And who has allowed this? You, the consumer. It is no longer about family and friends coming together, thankful for all that they have. Instead it is a contest to see who spends more money. The companies start advertising months before the season and strategically place items where shoppers will see them and think, "wow, it's on sale, better get it while I can." They purposely order large quantities of useless items knowing they will be purchased as last-minute gifts. And let us not forget all of the wonderful "clearance items" placed throughout the store. These are simply items that did not sell the first time they were put on the salesfloor and they will become someone's treasure for re-gifting next year. The great "Day after Thanksgiving Sale". Yeah, right. Those special items are ordered in mass quantities months in advance, marked-up by anywhere from 60-90 percent and placed in the major aisle of the store to be sure you see them. Of course once you're there you will find several other items you can't live without. The holidays have turned into a billion-dollar event for mass retailers and for that you should all be ashamed. Also for that, I, being in retail, would like to thank each and every one of you?
