Different = Taboo?

How being different in style, art, thought or anything is often frowned on by mainstream society.

I publish a Gothic Arts magazine called "Eye of the Beholder". It is contributor based and was originally started as a way to get my own poetic vision out in print. It has however expanded to include great work contributed by many Artists of many genres.(photography,writing,pen and charcoal drawings etc.)

The first issues at lulu.com are available for purchase along with several books of my original poetry. Sadly I have noticed that getting the word out is a hard and tumultuous road. Pitfalls and stereotypical cliche comments are prevalent in people who choose to think that Gothic = Columbine or the Night Stalker, Richard Ramirez.

To me, this is tragic. It however goes to show how shallow some people can be. Ignorance is after all, a choice.

In general, I think that people who are biased and selectively ignorant of the things around them miss opportunities. They miss great talent and beauty because they hear the term Gothic or Rock music or whatever the not so mainstream subject may be and say "Oh, No I can't read that" or "Oh No I can't listen to that" without actually taking the time to see what it's all about.

Why is being different taboo in our society? why is it often frowned upon no matter how beautiful it may really be? The Answer to this very question still eludes me, however I think people fear different, and so, they avoid it. That is to me a very sad thing.

I was looking at Lulu.com yesterday.People of like mindedness have always stuck together, its human nature.As I am getting older I find myself not wanting to waste the time I have left on this earth with people who are so different that there are no commonalities and interaction is a chore! Life is too short!
