England in Trouble

Some thoughts on why this country is collapsing under its own weight.

Why are so many people to desperate to enter the UK whilst many Britons are dreaming of leaving?

I have often dreamed about leaving the UK to go and live abroad somewhere hot and sunny. It was never a serious dream until very recently though, when myself and my partner began to visit some of his friends who emigrated to France five years ago. They live on the West Coast close to La Rochelle, 20 minutes from the beach, 5 minutes from town and have a gigantic garden (back and front) with a very large pond, I call it the lake. The two children are now 15 and 12 and have fitted in extremely well, in school life and society in general. Back in the UK, they lived on the edge of an estate which was not considered to great. Nowadays it is even worse. The whole of my city is filling up with "no go" areas. I have lived here for 25 years and have seen this city ruined by yobs and the parents who can't control them. I feel ashamed sometimes when I hear about what is happening on my streets and when I see it.

Some bus companies have pulled their routes from certain areas fo town because they are too scared for their lives and those of their passengers. The amount of times bricks have been thrown through bus windows at passengers is unbelievable. Busses get stopped by gangs of youths who then rob the driver and mug all the passengers. It is a disgusting state of affairs. People are getting beaten to death on a regular basis now, by KIDS, and people are getting shot or stabbed. I cannot believe the way my city has gone in recent years. This has all happened over the last 10 years or so as numbers in our country continue to creep up. I am of the opinion that the more people you squeeze into a small place, the more serious crime you will experience. Is that not what is happening now in England? So many people come in every day, hoping to get a better life here, but the problem is just getting worse. We are such a small country, there is hardly enough space as it is, let alone for the millions more who will enter the country over the next couple of years. What will they do? Will they house over our green areas that the UK prides itself on? We don't have enough space really, so I can see that happening.

Back to the idea of us leaving the UK though. Last year, after several visits to our friends, we decided to buy a small place to use for holidays, with a view to retire (very) early in about 10 years or so. Life in the country in France is so relaxed. Where we go, there is hardly any crime at all, only really burglaries when the gypsies set up camp in the area- so we have been advised. Everybody we have met so far is very friendly and they don't seem to have a problem with the English people moving in to the area. The summers are very warm and the beaches are great, you don't have to pay for the parking and they are never really overcrowded even in the summer. If you ask people who have moved to France why they did, the majority of them will tell you that it's because it is like England was 50 years ago. That is why we like it too. The UK has turned into such a viscious place to live, with gangs of children taking over the streets and murdering people or beating them, often randomly.

Apart from those that have left war stricken countries to find a better life, can you honestly say that the UK is a nice place to live at the moment? Those of you who have lived here your whole life must be able to see the destructive changes happening right in front of our eyes. I almost feel ashamed of my country at the moment and unfortunately do not see it getting any better, just drastically worse.

I work away from the UK for 3-4 months at a time and I can't wait to get back! I've been around the world many times on my travels and can honestly say there is no where that I would rather live than the UK.
I note your point that crime has risen but when the methods of communication have increased ie the Internet, TV, radio, newspapers - we are bombarded with negative news which makes us believe things are getting worse, when in reality they are probably not as bad as we are being led to believe.
I also think that the immigration issue is a problem the whole of Europe is trying to deal with, not just the UK.
Great article though :)

I must admit i never thought i'd be ashamed to be british but I have been recently. Our govt has no clue about the real world, the MP for Peckham was escorted around her own consistengncy by 3 police officers, wearing a stab vest! i mean for gods sake what does that tell you? How many times have we seen on the news that our "trusted Govt has lost personal and sensitive information? how many people are dying everyday that are not mentioned in the news due to teen crime and gangs? Im tired of being wrapped up in coton wool by a goverment so sensitive and PC ITS UNREALISTIC? they have lost touch with the "working class" what with inflation and fuel prices soaring to record highs, what does our beloved chancellor suggest? "that we do not force a national workforce wage increase to help the cost of living amongst famillies and those who struggle to pay the basic bills" so what hes saying is that hes not bothered because he earns enough to live comfortably? and that we are the people out of pocket to keep him and his associates comfy? Well maybe this "Anthony23yearsold" is correct? maybe not in the sense of a revolution or civil war (that would make things worse then they are now, look at iraq? before with saddham they were unhappy but had a way of life? now they suffer and are in turmoil) but the fact that this country is rapidly becoming a powderkeg country that with the slightest spark will errupt into something the governing body cannot cope with? (we are looking at near years the way things are going) So sort it out or get out, thats the obvious answer. Is this the England we want to grow up in? ask yourselfs are you going to let it?
