Generations to Generations

The way students and the youth live their lives, parallel to the generations of yesterday and today.

People nowadays are different from the generations of the past in terms of fashion, habits, and even the way they think - politically, socially, and intellectually.

As generations change and as the people grow old, why do their cultures, ideas, and habits also change? As we gathered information by doing a short survey from different students of different year levels, we learned a lot of things that explains why things change.

Do you go out on weekends? Who are you with most of the time? Where do you go most of the time? These were just some of the questions asked to the students who underwent the survey. The responses were mostly the same. A lot of people go out during weekends with their family most of the time. Sometimes friends, sometimes relatives, and sometimes boyfriend or girlfriend, but nothing beats family. This may be because of the trait of having strong family ties. Despite the problems and the trials we have with our family, we still go strong. Our family is the only one we can run to aside from God. Our families and we rush to malls and supermarkets every weekends, and this way of sharing love and time really makes us bond together. Activities such as this never change since then, thus making everyone a family oriented person.

Regarding the questions about responsibilities, students nowadays are so much preoccupied with things such as computer games and gadgets that they don't even care to do responsibilities at home. In the past generations, people were so hard working that even going home from a tough day at school, they still need to do the responsibilities they need to do. But now, it is a big burden for parents to ask their children for help with chores. This may be a result of too many newly launched technologies. Has the trait of a true Pinoy or Chinoy already changed? Has their culture really degrading? The answer might be a 40% - 60% of yes and no, respectively. Yes, because some students still do their tasked work even arriving home from a very busy day at school, especially if the student knows how to value time and how to obey their parents as written in the Bible. More of no, because in this time of age, a lot of new gadgets are being released, which makes things faster even without a certain person's supervision. Another reason of answering "no" would probably be the existence of helpers and maids, thus making children lazy.

Moving on with the question about fashion, it resulted that most of the students do not go along with fads (fashions). They have their own reasons for this and we can't judge or blame them. For the "yes" responses, they reasoned out that they just follow their friends, thinking that what they are doing is cool. This result may or may not be applicable to other people. It may not be applicable as for the reason of always hearing news about youth and teens who go along with fashion statements and trends, due to the belief that if many people does this or wear that, it means that it is what we so called as “in.”

More students said that they don't want to stand out among others. They say that standing out may result to tagging them as a “weird” or “strange” person. On the contrary, some said that they would love to stand out because they believe that they have their unique qualities that give them the right to stand out.

The type of music one listens to influences him to be different from others. Each person has his own favorites and likes. It resulted amongst all the high school students that the most likely music to be listened to is pop, while the least type of music listened to is alternative or rock. The type of music a person chooses depicts his personality. Once a person chooses rock or alternative as his type of music, nothing is wrong, but a lot of people would think of him as weird and bad-boy type, because words that are being shouted in such music types are more of vulgar and filthy ones.

People around you influence you to be different as well. Most students answered "God" as the Person who really influences them. They said that He is the only one Who has the right to influence and change us, because He holds our life and future. Some said that it would most likely be their friends who influence them, because they are with them most of the time. Some say that it's their family and some say that they have their own someone - whoever or whatever is it, really they do influence us.

In conclusion of this, a lot (really a lot) of factors to consider in finding out what and why do people and generations to generations change. The truth is, God is our Controller, and He is the only one Who can change us, but due to a lot of temptations we face day after day, people really go with the flow and sometimes goes to a direction where there is no good outcome and can possibly destroy our own lives.
