On ignorance and tomorrow's world, inspired by the film Idiocracy by Mike Judge.
Tomorrow's world if today's kids would actually want to learn. Both very good definitions, despite spell checker not recognizing that word. But I will be writing about the latter, a subject that I wont be sued for copyright infringement. If you have read any of my previous writings (such as LOL) you will know that I blamed cell phones, and as I always say I never repeat my self so let us move on to another mind destroyer. I personally like myspace because it is the only way I can keep in touch with friends that I moved away from. I spend at the most an hour on myspace a week. However there are those whose lives revolve around myspace. These myspace addicts spend close to whole days on myspace, revamping their profiles on an hourly basis. For those of you who have a myspace, you must have noticed the friend's updates section. Well I have a friend who is on that list every hour. As if they have nothing better to do. But I'm not going to blame any friends. My focal point is that myspace is becoming an addiction. And people are paying more attention to myspace than anything else.
Thus creating Ignorance. To some Ignorance is Bliss. But that only works in the Matrix. I'm sorry; Ignorance is consuming our lives with only those with true passions know what is going on. If you don't give a care about politics, you wouldn't know about the Protests in Tibet. In the past, Americans were much less ignorant. Focusing on their government, where as today, we only focus on who is going to replace Bush. But I'm not going to get political here; I'm going to get Factual. If you have ever seen the aforementioned movie, you know how messed up the world is. If you haven't, here's a little background. The movie takes place 500 years from 2005 when two average people from 2005 are transported via a hibernation experiment gone wrong, 500 years into the future. In this world, everybody is, to put it bluntly, Idiots hence the name of the movie. So the main character, being your average American with average intelligence, is revered the smartest guy in the world and is forced to solve the world's problems, in the end he becomes president, and encourages learning.
I personally wouldn't like America to end up that way. I love my country, and I know it's not doing as well, but whose fault is it really? Bottom line. Today's kids, tomorrow's leaders. Kind of scary right? If dropout rates increase and test scores decline, there wont be any “smart people” to hold the big jobs (e.g. lawyers, doctors, engineers, political leaders) and if there is a lack of those jobs, the economy will go down because there will be too many people in the lower jobs, needing aid from the government and giving a very small portion of it back, thus crippling the economy. However, I'm not saying that everyone should be a genius, because whether you like it or not, we need people to fill the “lower” jobs to support the “middle” jobs, which use services provided by the “higher” jobs which give money to the government. But if there are no “higher” or “middle” jobs, then everyone is just taking money from the government and not giving any back.
I know I'm getting of the topic of myspace but that is because I don't need to revisit it. I've said all that I can about it. Besides, it's not myspace itself, but the ignorance of people whose lives revolve around it. I've said this in my other work (LOL) that we need more Nerds and Geeks to fill up the Nerdy and Geeky jobs, which in turn fuel the economy. So I am urging you. LEARN. Because you never know when knowing something will be useful; such as piloting an airplane, you're thinking, why I will ever need to know that. Think about that when the pilot's dead and the airplane is going to crash directly into the city. But I'm not telling you to go out there and fly, I'm asking you to explore new opportunities and to urge your children to learn and for you teens out there, pay attention in class, please our future really needs it. Thank you for listening.
